Re: Fiction: severing relationships

I think a reason that trope exists in fiction is because in fiction it's also more likely that people are going to realize they made a mistake/apologize/change/etc. In real life, often you just have to make the choice of cutting ties or putting up with it.

Tbh, I don't think I've read any fics where someone breaks off a relationship like that. Guess it depends on the fandom or something. I have read fics where a character who is awesome in their daily life goes 'home' and their current friend(s) find out how awful people there (still) treat them. Those often don't end in happy togetherness and forgiveness either, but more of a 'glad we're rid of those people' vibe.
