What's the weirdest or coolest thing you've done for writing research?

Is there anything really neat or awesome you've tried for the sake of research for your writing?

This Saturday I'm going to a fencing lesson with a community I'm a part of. The biggest deciding factor in doing this was because I have a character that excels in fencing and I wanted to try it myself.

I did a paper on prostitution in college and interviewed a bunch of prostitutes! Some in the US and some in Australia. It was pretty cool talking back and forth with them about their job, background, etc.

I bet that paper would be quite fascinating reading :). No doubt a lot of interesting stories shared there.

Nothing I'd be comfortable telling my grandmother about.

Tie between jumping out of an airplane and taking up archery. (The latter I liked enough to keep at it, the former I will probably not repeat.)

I've dragged various writer friends to the gun range, just so I can avoid straining my face muscles wincing at gun handling in stories.

When I was 13-14 and was writing a "fantasy novel" with a friend, we went to sleep outside for one night without tent or anything because hey, we make the characters sleep outside all the time on their journey, we need to know what it's like! Afterwards, we felt very sorry for our character because it was wet and cold and the bugs were fucking annoying.

I also spent a day in a falconry once. That was awesome.

Flying lesson in an open-cockpit biplane.

A day's blacksmithing.
