Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert

I've watched... probably 3 or 4 episodes so far. There are a lot of things that I like about it, but there are also a lot of times when it's not quite on point, not quite where I'd want it to be. Hopefully it'll improve. I really like a lot of the design choices, the creative choices, etc. I think it's definitely my favorite of any late night talk show right now.

I think part of the problem is that I'm subconsciously comparing it to Craig Ferguson's show. And that's kind of unfair - Ferguson was a genius and he did his show for like a million years. But I can't help but find Colbert's interviews stage-y and his bits a little awkwardly placed into the stream of things because I am comparing him to Ferguson who was SO GOOD at seeming natural and unforced and at doing spontaneous, wide-ranging interviews that didn't seem like pre-planned bits.

I also do get bugged a little bit by the fact that he has, what? Like, 17 writers on the show and two of them are women? That makes me just a bit disappointed in him. He should do better than that.

That said! I definitely have high hopes and I'm going to keep checking in and hoping it gets better.

Did Craig Ferguson have any female writers besides his sister? I don't remember.

Anyway, they're very different personalities. I don't think Colbert is capable of going into an interview and ripping up all the questions first thing like that.
