The Late Show with Steven Colbert
Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert
(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)I think part of the problem is that I'm subconsciously comparing it to Craig Ferguson's show. And that's kind of unfair - Ferguson was a genius and he did his show for like a million years. But I can't help but find Colbert's interviews stage-y and his bits a little awkwardly placed into the stream of things because I am comparing him to Ferguson who was SO GOOD at seeming natural and unforced and at doing spontaneous, wide-ranging interviews that didn't seem like pre-planned bits.
I also do get bugged a little bit by the fact that he has, what? Like, 17 writers on the show and two of them are women? That makes me just a bit disappointed in him. He should do better than that.
That said! I definitely have high hopes and I'm going to keep checking in and hoping it gets better.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert
(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)But I'm really enjoying the interviews-the one with Joe Biden last week was superb and I am ALL for seeing more interviews like that. The other poster here talked about comparisons to Craig Ferguson-I remember people saying one of the reasons Craig's show was so good was because of things like his monologue defending Britney Spears when she had her struggles, and opening up about his own alcoholic past, or talking about his parents when they passed away, or his interview with Bishop Tutu.
I think Stephen's interview with Biden is very comparable to those top moments from Craig's show, and I think if Stephen has more interviews like that, that will be very beneficial to his show. And on a significantly less serious note, the lighter interviews have been just as fun in their own right. And stuff like the whole bit with Carol Burnett and Kevin Spacey last night was delightful and adorable and sweet, so I'm up for seeing more of that sort of entertaining activity, too.
And I love that he is covering the political election, and that elements of his former show do seep in from time to time (including his eclectic musical guests). It's a nice nod to his past for "Colbert Report" fans, and a good way to help them transition from watching "Colbert" to Colbert, if that makes sense. Plus, Stephen's a very smart guy as it is, so I'm always interested to see his take on the presidential election, or interviewing a Supreme Court justice, or other politicians (I'm not a Republican, but I thought his conversation with Jeb was decent). No, he may not be doing a lot of the "messing with politicians" stuff that he was able to do on "The Colbert Report", but again, different show. I think he likes being able to just talk to them on a basic level, and try and humanize them when everyone else in the media is creating their own images and caricatures of the politicians right now (and keeping the rest of the politicians human is a nice contrast to the cartoon that is Trump right now, too, I think).
And finally, he just seems so giddy and happy whenever he comes out on stage, and it's clear that he really is having fun with his new gig. And I can't exactly fault the guy for that-his joy is infectious and just makes me want to root for his show to do well even more :D.
...so...um...apparently I have a lot of opinions about the show, LOL. But yeah. TL;DR, I'm liking it and I'm excited to see what else he'll do with it as time goes on.
Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert
And yes, his happiness is infectious. He loves what he does and it shows.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)I've always admired Stephen's focus on joy and happiness, and his lack of cynicism about things in general. It's refreshing.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:34 am (UTC)(link)And on days the real world news was utterly shitty, he always found ways to either address it in honest yet hopeful ways, or just found ways to make people laugh and get their minds off the crap they dealt with in the real world for half an hour.
I'm a generally optimistic person, so I'm always happy when I see other people with that worldview (I certainly understand the pessimistic/cynical mindset, though, of course, and some days it's hard to keep myself from not going to that attitude!). And like you said, I like that we're in general agreement politically, too. As for being hopeful about the future, I think he has the same reasoning I do-I just always think about all the other horrible stuff people have managed to get through and survive in the past, and figure, if they managed to make it through their hellish experiences, we'll be able to as well. It may take a while, sure, and it won't always be pretty, but I like to think we'll get there eventually :).
Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert
I watched Stephen for years on The Colbert Report, and when he and Jon ended their shows it felt like there was a weird void, so seeing him back on television feels right. I love his sense of humor (some of the sketches are silly, but IDC, I still like them), I love that he's still talking about politics (and hope he keeps at it! It's what he does best) and has had fun or insightful interviews. He did a great job with both Jeb and Joe Biden. I hope there are more serious interviews to come, because although I enjoy the lightheartedness of the show in general, he's good with those too.
Plus, he's pretty and I enjoy watching him sing and dance on a regular basis.
If you like him on The Late Show, I think you would enjoy TCR. IMO The Colbert Report is a much stronger show, but of course Stephen is new to late night so I won't hold that against him; it's going to take a while for him to get used to things. (For instance, not playing a character.)
I just adored the format of The Colbert Report...and again, his sense of humor is so on point. He had some amazing interviews on that show, but I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with for this one. He hasn't disappointed me yet.
(Also, he's basically the biggest Tolkien nerd on the planet. Thought that might interest you.)
