By not thinking everyone around me is dumb. There are different kind of smarts. I'm really, really not practically smart or street smart or smart in relation to things like arts and sports. So there is always something I can learn from anyone. And thinking otherwise makes you pretentious and kind of a jerk.

this this this. as the smart kid who got bullied, and ended up hating most people for being "dumb" i learnt i was being a shit myself, and recognising people's worth as something over than what *i* in my arrogance called smart or dumb.

nayrt

What if you're surrounded by people who think climate change is a hoax created by the Chinese to render US industry uncompetitive, the Jews brought the Holocaust on themselves by being Communists, and Satan himself inspired Darwin's Origin of Species...but no jokes in front of them about chemtrails, please and thank you! Are you supposed to look for hidden wisdom and a different kind of intelligence in what they're saying, or can you just write them off as dumber than a bag of hair?

Try not putting it in a dichotomy to start. Everyone is smart in some areas and dumb in others.

Re: Smart people

(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Well, I don't think most people around me are really dumb. And I also don't think intelligence is all that meaningful, which helps. I mean, smarts are one thing out of many, you know? There are a nearly infinite number of good qualities to appreciate about people regardless of their intelligence. So I try to do that.

I think the real challenge is communication, where it can be hard to get ideas across sometimes, and frustrating. And there's not much to that except trying to get better at communication.

Also, surrounding yourself with other smart people is a hella strong move.

You sound fun at parties.

Seriously like what everyone is saying. Most people are smart in some areas and not as much in others. I'm good at expressing myself through writing (most of the time) and in creative things, but when it comes to social and everyday situations I'm kinda derp.

I smile gently and indulge them by replying to their wankbait comments on FS.

Re: Smart people

(Anonymous) 2015-09-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I get in a lot of fights, because I say things that sound perfectly reasonable to me, but forget that I haven't expressed to people all the quiet thinking that went on in my head to get me there. So basically I deal by being socially awkward and avoiding confrontation, because I suck at it.

I don't. I make everyone who wishes to bask in my glorious presence take an IQ test before I decide if they're worthy of the pleasure.

I see you're really dumb when it comes to social interactions and understanding intelligence. I'm afraid you don't qualify as smart anymore, membership revoked.

Re: Smart people

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Smartness, by itself, is overrated.

A wise person will realize that "smartness" actually comes in multiple flavors. They will learn to recognize and value people's other good qualities, instead of getting hung up on a concept like "smart/dumb."

1. Ignore (it's not my problem)
2. Rationalize (maybe they're having a bad day)
3. Sympathize (not everyone has the privileges I've had)

I silently sigh, then try to leave as fast as possible to go read a book.

Re: Smart people

Remind yourself that you probably say deeply stupid things yourself, more often than you realize. And that there are people who are way smarter than you. You never know who they'll turn out to be. And for all you know, one or two of them were right there the last time you dropped a brick.

By prying my head out of my ass.

Going out of your way to meet people who are smarter than you - or who are very knowledgeable in fields you're a novice in - helps with that a lot. Especially if they're gracious enough to explain things to you and answer your questions, so you can realize it's actually possible to treat people who aren't subject experts like they're real human beings, and that not doing so doesn't make you seem brilliant, it makes you seem like an arrogant little shit.
