Re: Fandom Wank/Fanficrants

I can't believe I'm saying this but the SJWs ruined it. I don't know what it's like now but there was a time where the SJWs very aggressively took offense at the slightest hint of an unfortunate turn of phrase. It got to the point where pretty much the only thing people ranted about anymore was spelling and terrible, stereotypical(and often fake-sounding) depictions of LGBT characters or issues. People accuse tumblr of making it about brownie points for SJWs but you could see the same happening on ffr.

EXACTLY!! If you say anything at all they turn it around.

SJWs are why I avoid tumblr entirely but ffrants has definitely gotten the same treatment.

Yeah, that's why I left. While sometimes ffr could be nasty, I remember there being some thoughtful posts and discussions, and it was interesting to see people discussing why certain things worked/didn't work for them.

Then it became SJW central and just got painful and boring.

Yes, that was the reason I stopped reading there. What used to be fun turned into super serious business, and it became a chore to read. So that was that, and then I found fandomsecrets instead. :)

I'm not entirely joking when I say that SJWs killed LJ. From, mmm, 2008-2012, there were a lot of communities that were very active, but much like FFR, they were filled with people who were using the tone argument and intent isn't magic (which are important concepts, but people took them and twisted them) as a "win the argument" bludgeon. Introduce Tumblr, and they went thataway, but not before damaging many communities to points that are now non-recoverable. I have lost track of the number of people who said they left LJ, not because of the LJ team's assholery (though I know plenty of those, too), but because of how every community they were part of was becoming a haven for the extremist SJWs.

And this is coming from someone who cares a lot about social issues. It got to the point that I wasn't able to make a post on MY OWN JOURNAL without taking anxiety medication. Not because I had a bunch of SJWs friended (I have a lot who, like me, care about social issues but aren't jerks about it), but because I had gotten so damn used to that environment that I was subconsciously bracing for it even in somewhere that I knew was safe, because I could ban the assholes. Sigh.

It got to the point I only read the offshot community... ffrantsrants I think? Where people ranted about the rants. IIRC people were more reasonable there but it died from lack of activity.

lol oh please

I was just backreading some well known fanficrants wank of old the other day, and the amount of offensive shit that went unchecked was abysmal. I'm not talking small, "you used this slightly out of date terminology!" shit, I'm talking outright homophobia, creepy fangirl fetishism of ~teh gay~, cutesy and offensive stereotypes, rampant use of the word "retard," even in cases where an offensive OP was getting their ass handed to them, more often than not the side attacking them was just as offensive and shit as the original offender. I'd much rather deal with self righteous idiots than listen to some fangirl debate whether warning for "gayness" is okay or not in all seriousness.
