Re: The Mummy
This is, at least, the tale according to my friends in archaeology.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)The protagonist saying that sounds accurate enough to the times, to be fair. The antagonist agreeing is the part that's weird and racist
Re: The Mummy
I was just really surprised and amused by how culturally insensitive the thing is.

Re: The Mummy
(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)People post smug shit on the internet throwing around words like bigoted. Let's take it back 60/70 years and see whether you were one of the few who spoke out for civil rights, gay rights. Or even furher back, how many of us would have had the strength to stand up for women's rights in the fact of all that hostility?
How many of you are out there at protests to support the real issues? How many people who race to get offended at every single thing are out there standing with the people of Ferguson. Or any of the hundreds of causes that surely deserve some civil action in this world.
For fuck's sake.
Re: The Mummy
I'm not really judging -judging- anyone, and as someone who's hopelessly in love with Victorian lit, I'm normally the first one to jump to the defense of dubious literary tropes from the days long gone. I agree people often judge old fiction out of ignorance or false sense of self-righteousness.
I was comparing older works to modern ones in a sort of joking, amused way, not seeking to make any sort of social justice statement.
Did I really misword my original post this badly? It might be, considering how late it is over here.
Re: The Mummy
(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 01:25 am (UTC)(link)Yet the level of vitriol piled onto things that are several decades out of context.... Or the dogpiling that happens for the simplest miswording of something.
It's a nerve. I misinterpreted your post and my misreading hit that nerve right on the head. Apologies.
Re: The Mummy
I don't think those who pass sweeping judgements on all "problematic" older fiction understand how history works or what the implications of their views are. They deny the existence of kindness, care, acceptance, and ultimately, basic humanity because they can't stomach the idea of good people in imperfect societies - or, for that matter, good but flawed people.

Yeah exactly. It's actually a rhetoric that is scary to me in its own right. To deny that people can be mistaken, misled, and instead can only be either good or evil is terrifying. It's the atmosphere of the Salem witchhunts, or of Nazi Germany. You're either with us or against us - and if you're against us then you're subhuman and you deserve everything you get. That's the thinking that seems to happen on every side of every argument these days. It's not healthy.
