Fruit pastry and moldy raspeberries

(Anonymous) 2015-09-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
My neighbor's birthday party was Saturday. Today he came over and gave us a pastry - I guess it's a tart? It's like a pie crust with creamy filling and fruit on top. He said too many people had given him cakes so he had to give some away.

Unfortunately, I noticed three of the raspberries in the middle of the fruit had a small amount of mold. Not a lot, just a few little fuzzy spots. I removed those three. None of the other fruit seems to have any mold.

It came from a store, but the label was removed, so I can't find the expiration date.

Would you eat a pastry if a small amount of the fruit had mold on it and that fruit had been removed? Is the rest likely to be safe to eat?

I wouldn't.

No, but I have a thing about mold.

Yeah. Mold doesn't really hurt you. Hell, there is steak and cheese and such that is aged to HAVE mold. Then just cut the moldy part off and sell you the rest?

OP

I know that if you have moldy cheese, you can cut off the outside of the cheese, and the inside will be fine. But I think fruit is a bit different?

I'm also worried about the filling. I don't know what those things are made of (and like I said, the label is gone) but I am worried that if it's been around long enough for some of the fruit to have mold, then maybe the filling could have gone off, even if it's not moldy?

I've never heard of steak being aged to the point of having mold. Do you have a link for that? Meat is one of the last things I'd eat after it's gone bad in any way...

That type of mold isn't the same as what you find in aged cheeses and steaks.

Not to mention, mold can also grow alongside bacteria like salmonella, listeria and e-coli. Cutting around the mold isn't going to do much in that case.

No, throw it out.

Hell no.

You don't have any way of knowing what type it is, or where else the spores are that you can't see.

So short answer is no. It's not safe.

It's sad, but it's probably best to bin it.

I might, if I saw it myself and it looked okay. Is it absolutely safe to eat? No idea. I actually don't know if mold in particular is bad for you (and there are different kinds of mold).

Yes, but I would cut off a piece around the moldy part, just in case.

The Google informs me that berries and sugary creamy jelly type things and baked goods are permeable, and will likely have mold growing within as well as on the surface. Don't eat it.

I would and I do eat things that have a little bit of mold on them after removing well around the moldy part. And as someone who is immunosuppressed, it has never once gotten me sick. However, things to note: my parents also did this when I was young. What can I say? We were poor. You don't waste food when you're poor, even food with a bit of mold on it.

I'm not sure I'd recommend it to someone who didn't have that upbringing.

Yeah, same, coming from another person who grew up poor and would cut moldy bits off of fruit and veggies. I didn't learn until later in life this was a no-no, but, for what it's worth, I've always had a strong general health and immune system (not necesarilly because of the mold; maybe I just had a good health already and was therefore not made sick by the mold. Or I just got lucky).

Well, knowing what I know now... it's really the exposure in childhood that stimulates that immune response. So yeah, I will certainly continue eating stuff that had had moldy bits cut off of it, because at this point I've done it so much that it has little to no deleterious effect.

Again, wouldn't necessarily recommend that as a strategy to someone who has never done it before.

No but that's because I know that by the time you can see mold then it has spread far enough in ways you can't see.

If it was the raspberries, yes.

Raspberries are way more susceptible to mold and mold over way faster than any other fruit IME.

No. I got halfway through an odd tasting pastry once only to look down and see mold. My stomach survived but I felt unwell the whole night thinking about it.

Last night I was going to buy discount strawberries but on inspection every packet had tiny traces of mold. I can't.

Sure. I've eaten a few bites of stuff with mold on it before I noticed the mold was there and never gotten sick from it.

Raspberries are also more prone to mold than most other types of fruit, so chances are the rest of it is just fine.

Eh, I've done it a few times and was okay. You might get a bit of a stomach ache at the very most. I'd be more careful with meat products than fruit especially berries which attract mould easily without being old (means the dairy is probably fine).

Everything has spores really, so you can't be too pure except for your own comfort.

I wouldn't, I've eaten slightly moldy fruit by cutting off the bad part, but a whole cooked item of any kind? You can't tell how far in it's gone, so it's not safe. Also, I have a friend who'd get sick from any kind of mold whatsoever. If you're at all allergic, abort, do not eat it!

DO NOT EAT THE THING.

Mold can also grow along with bacteria like listeria, salmonella, and e-coli.

It is NOT the same as aged cheeses. Especially if it's a cooked pastry item. I wouldn't do it, OP.

What others have said: molds can extend their hyphae all through the surrounding fruit and cream filling even if you can't see it.
