I don't like the art but I'm thinking of giving it a chance, I saw a clip of the two lesbian blue and red women kissing and it was adorable.

But something that bother me about the show, does it have any positive male representation? It seems that the only relevant male characters are the main boy and his father and they are both fat.

Oh, man, that's some good shit. Well done, anon.

They're not lesbians. They're gal pals. And sisters. And cousins.

Sorry, but every male character is fat.

They are lovers, actually. Whether or not they're lesbians is sort of up for interpretation because they're female-presenting but really agender.

ETA: clarifying that I'm talking about Ruby and Sapphire which is what I assumed AYRT was referring to

I was being sarcastic :( I thought calling them both sisters and cousins would show that, but it looks like my sarcasm skills are forever destined to be broken on F!S.

To be fair, I am really bad at reading sarcasm, so it probably wasn't you, anon. (And re-reading it, it seems really obvious now. Sorry!)

I wouldn't say "fat" is a negative thing on this show. The deceased leader of the good guys had a large build as well.

As for positive representation, almost every character on this show has moments of being wrong about something, but Steven and Greg are definitely good characters overall, and Jamie is starting to develop positively after a rough start. The show definitely has an abundance of female characters, but I wouldn't say it's sexist.

Now this is a quality troll.

Exactly. Perfectly reasonable right until the end - that's how it's done!

DA

Because Steven's the perspective character, the show spends a lot of time looking at female-presenting people. But Steven himself is outright supposed to be a portrayal of non-toxic masculinity, though he's still a complex character with plenty of flaws and growth. His dad is fantastic - probably my favourite character, and not at all the person he's kind of presented as to start with.

There are no male-presenting gems, by definition, though occasionally Amethyst's shapeshifting takes her in an overtly masculine direction.

In the town, we have Mayor Dewey (overbearing hetero who nobody likes except Steven), Lars (complex character - teenage douche who pushes people away and is ultimately a vulnerable sad person who is getting support from his friends, but the fandom seems to think something's gonna tip there sooner or later). We've got Sour Cream, the cool kid who just wants to be a DJ, goooooooood. Whatever. His half-brother Onion, who is PROPERLY WORRYING. We've got Ronaldo, resident Fox Mulder/Dib, who is soooooo close to understanding what's going on but is just kind of too up in people's shit, staaaaahp, put the camera down. His little brother Peedee is about forty-eight in terms of world-weariness and general assumption of responsibility. Jamie the mailman needs to grow up. A lot. But he's kind of the MRA archetype but portrayed with sympathy and grace, and that's a nice thing to see. And he's getting there.

There are others. These are just the first which sprang to mind. And for the record, Steven, Greg and Ronaldo are fat, Jamie and Sour Cream are rather skinny, and in general the male characters have plenty of variation in character design, just like the female or feminine-presenting characters (though the male characters are obviously going to vary along more human lines).

I think you're being a little harsh on Dewey and Jamie. The couple of episodes that focus on Dewey show that the town actually likes him as a mayor (if not as a person to be buds with) and he and his son have a pretty good relationship despite some small problems. And Jamie responds to Garnet's talk at the end of the first episode way too well to be anything like an MRA.

AYRT

Yeah, I just felt like in summation, Jamie may have been created in response to the question of where MRAs are coming from. Garnet did put it into perspective very carefully, and if she'd been less aware, he might have become worse. Dewey I guess I was talking about more from the perspective of the fandom. People making .gifs of Pearl shutting him down and whatnot. I guess the real point was that the guys are varied and flawed too.
