You're not old. That song is horrible.

Why is he asking the "old fashioned father" for his daughter's hand if, as the singer implies, he is not also old fashioned? If the consent of the father never mattered in the first place why are you bothering to ask? Have you even asked the girl? Why is she, like, a box of wine I feel you're stealing from the old man's house? Maybe the reason that dad said no was because you fucking asked him for his daughter as if you were buying a box of wine, you shit head. I could go on. The whole song is all kinda of skeevy.

Where even is the girl in this whole song? Like... I just want to shout "What if she's just fucking you and never in her wildest dreams would want to marry you? Did you even think about that douchewad?!" at him the whole time he's whine-singing.

...I assumed he had already asked her or at least talked to her about it, and was asking the father for the sake of peace in the family since it was important to him (to the father) that he do so, and sometimes compromise is best if you want to have a relationship with your in-laws that doesn't involve trying to strangle each other???

I'm honestly really surprised that I'm apparently the only person who came to this conclusion.

I tried to give him the benefit of a doubt but in all honesty the way he talks about the girl (For example: as an object to with as he wishes) really strips that explanation from my mind as a possibility.

You weren't the only one to come to the conclusion. I just discarded it as plausible.

.......this is literally the whole point of why this thread frustrates me yet everyone seems to be defending it. Everyone seems to be saying that she IS his to give away and he doesn't have to do it so the narrator needs to go away.

I feel like all he really said about the girl was she was in love with him too (which I assumed to be true from the way it was being told, just like I assume it in pretty much every other love song where someone says the other person also loves them)...I don't think he said much else. How was he objectifying her? I guess the "she will go anywhere I go line" could be interpreted that way. I didn't see it that way. Some people are like that.

...I guess a lot really depends on your initial approach, huh?

I did think of that but it doesn't make it any less annoying. If the father doesn't approve of him then he shouldn't react like 'I'm gonna marry her anyways!!!' maybe he should respect her parents more and figure out why the father doesn't approve of him.

He didn't mention much about the girl or her family anyways, so this speculation is pointless.

Why is it important to figure out why the father doesn't approve of him?

I mean from a self-improvement standpoint sure, but you're assuming the dad doesn't like him because he's a bad person, and not for some other arbitrary and possibly bigoted reason. And he's not obligated to meet some measuring stick set up by the dad before marrying his daughter because she's a fucking adult.
