I don't care what the creators say. I expect someone knew about this initiation ritual and that is why they added it. Hell, it doesn't even seem that crazy for an initiation ritual to me. I mean, have you seen some of the initiation rituals from around the world? This is the "posh british white boy baby" version of initiation rituals.

Baby white boy initiation ritual.

HERE is a real initiation ritual. "This Amazon tribe performs an initiation ritual where young men really place their hands into mittens filled with hundreds of bullet ants. The bite is approximately 20 times more painful than being stung by a wasp. The men will place their hands into the mittens and dance for 10 minutes. The ant’s sting prevents the body from protecting itself from pain. The body begins to convulse, and the pain can last up to 24 hours."

I agree. That's not to say I think it's okay, I think it's awful, but in comparison to some of the other initiation rituals out there? Some people get crazy on even a little power, and they use that power to humiliate people under them. Because they think it's funny. Which is really the terrible part.

And anyone who says, "Oh, it's tradition. It fosters brotherly/sisterly/team bonds!" Is the worst. Tradition changes, and all the traditions around humiliating people for membership in something need to change. Pronto.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The context is even worse than you're implying. The initiation ritual was to join a club who was for rich people who knew that they would one day be in a position of power. The purpose of the initiation ritual was to create bond of secrecy between future leaders of industry, politics, etc. I.e. the members would always have something to hold over people in extreme power - the heads of banks, the Prime Minister.

It's fucked up.

Basically, this. Hazing the new guy by making him do something gross and demeaning.

But no one wants to see it from that perspective, because there's no such thing as peer pressure or need for acceptance in their world.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I accept that these are systemically bad things and that even in this specific instance it is probably a bad thing that they happened.

At the same time, I think David Cameron is a bad person, I think his policies have been wrong and harmful, and I am comfortable finding humor in this story on that basis.
raspberryrain: (side eye)

I thought of that, too.

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2015-09-27 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that what happened on Black Mirror is very, very different, it may just be a coincidence. But I suspect there was at least a vague awareness of this being a thing, that got reimagined into something entirely different for the story.

Re: I thought of that, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not according to the creator. There was only one writer and he claims, quite convincingly, in at least one article that he had no idea.

The only thing I can think of was that he might have heard a kernel of the truth in passing at a TV party that he wasn't even aware of.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Small amendment: nowhere does it say that the Piers Gaveston club has been solely white. Given the number of future world leaders that have attended Eton and Oxford and therefore probably joined, that seems a very stupid assumption.

Isn't the Piers Gaveston club a tiny proportion of Etonians, though?

Aww, piggy <3

(talking about the one in the photo, obviously.)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I was struck by how oddly similar it was too, and at first I was like, "No way, someone's just making a huge 'Black Mirror' joke, right???"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the exact same thing all week!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. At first I couldn't understand the news was real because someone told me it over the phone and I was convinced they were making a Black Mirror joke.

Charlie Brooker must have fallen off his chair when he heard. It's like that scene in Father Ted where reality and fantasy get all mixed up and bunny rabbits dance around Father Dougal's brain.

When I heard about it I had this vague feeling that I'd heard about it before... now I finally know why!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
why don't guys ever learn
don't put your dick in it

(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder the same thing. Some guys desperately need to learn that just because you can stick it in something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

I was more creeped out by the "light money on fire in front of homeless people" thing, tbh. I mean, at least the poor pig was already dead. The money thing was all about humiliating and taunting actual living people. Although if the pig hadn't been dead, Cameron might've ended up a eunuch.

WHAT.

Okay, the pig thing is gross but not actually harmful to the big since it's, you know, dead. But that? Wow that is terrible, shitty, disgusting behavior right there.

My thoughts too. I can laugh about the pig thing. Wow, the ruling class's baby ruling rituals. Disgusting.

For proper context on this story, I suggest this article:

http://theleveller.org/2015/09/british-really-laughing/

Sheds more light on the dark underbelly of Cameron and the rich 'ruling class' that Eton and Oxford produce.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's ridiculous that people are getting bent out of shape over this. He didn't get beaten up, he wasn't raped and didn't rape anyone except a pig... who was already dead. It was some yucky, silly fun that some asshole decided the world needs to know about. David Cameron should say that he did it and laugh about it, then us sensible people can move on.
