(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)But I'm curious about those who do prefer ROTJ. What is it that you like better about it??
Re: The best one in the series.
(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 04:34 am (UTC)(link)ROTJ has bright costumes, music, a fight scene that's just plain *fun*, Ewoks, and Palpatine being the shivery sort of creepy. It's a *fun* movie. It's not too serious and it doesn't take itself very seriously.
ESB, on the other hand, has boring backgrounds (Hoth, looking at you), that dramatic freezing scene, most of the relationship back-and-forth, a training montage, and that dramatic father-son moment. To a kid, the only fun part is the AT-AT battle on Hoth. There's a ton of plot and story, and if you can appreciate the Empire as a whole as enemies, yeah they're scary, but it's just not as interesting to a child.
And once those ideas are set, they're hard to change. I really enjoy ESB now, but ROTJ will always have a special place in my heart because I see it and think, "Awww, nostalgia!"

Thanks for the reply, it makes a lot of sense. For me, ESB gets the huge nostalgia boost, because the first time I saw Star Wars, it was in a movie theatre - double feature of SW and ESB. So Star Wars in general was this amazing film that was like nothing my little kid brain had ever seen before, and the Father/Son reveal, and the cliffhanger ending - all of it just broke my brain with fannish happiness.
While I think that ESB still holds up well for a lot of reasons, it also gets the extra nostalgia boost for me. ROTJ, I was happy to see it in the theatres, but somehow I wanted more than the film gave me.
Anyway, thanks for the reply - I think it makes a lot of sense!
