The best one in the series.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-09-27 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually in a series or trilogy there is a popular opinion about which book/film/etc is the "best" one. Return Of The Jedi, The Temple Of Doom, and the first SAW movie, to name a few, are popular examples of the best films in their respective series.

Do you agree? What's your example of a series where you thought a different installment was better than the one everyone else thinks is best?

Return Of The Jedi, The Temple Of Doom

Trollin' SO hard

(I mean, Temple of Doom is actually my personal favorite, but come on, dude, you gotta be a little more subtle) (I assume the SAW one is similarly controversial but I never watched any of them)

Re: The best one in the series.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-09-27 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not even trolling, but I don't like Star Wars, admittedly. I have just heard that's the best one from most people who do like it.

Also not big on Indy. Raiders might be more popular.

...I chose bad examples, come to think of it.

I agree with Return of the Jedi.

Squire is the best Tortall novel, imo.

I think Command Decision is the best Vatta's War novel, and arguably the best thing by Elizabeth Moon, though it's been long enough I don't remember specifics as to why I feel that way.

Firebird by Kathy Tyers, but only the first edition. When she went back and re-wrote the entire series with heavy-handed religious overtones I didn't like any of it anymore.

I think the prequel Underworld movie is the best. I'm not entirely sure why. I love all of them, but that one's just it for me.

I like The Two Towers best, both in books and movies.

I think Prisoner of Azkaban is the best HP novel, though that's mostly because the Marauder's Map insulting Snape is my favourite scene in the whole series.

Quest's End is my favourite Elfquest trade paperback, though I don't know if I could pick a favourite comic issue from it.

I don't know how these stack up in popular opinion. I'm not entirely sure what the popular opinion favourite *is* in any of them. These are just mine.

Adventure 02 is probably my favorite Digimon series, but the fandom at large seems to hate it. :c

I LOVE Digimon Adventure 02. It's my fave season even with what flaws it has.

(granted a good chunk of that is because KEN but still)

I don;t know about best, but my favorite Star Wars film is The Phantom Menace. :/ To be fair, it is the only one I remember really well.

Out of the Saw movies, I think I might like the second one the best...

Re: The best one in the series.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-09-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of the later SAW movies were surprisingly good. There was a whole run of them that were just mediocre crap though.

For Star Wars, I feel Revenge of the Sith is the best

For Harry Potter, my favorite is Goblet of Fire (it seems like the favorite is Prisoner of Azkaban)

For Avatar: The Last Airbender, most people like Season 2 the best, but I actually like Season 3 a bit more

Re: The best one in the series.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-09-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't make it to season 3. Which is terrible, I know. I was watching it on TV at the time and became too busy to keep up with it.
elaminator: (Assassin's Creed 3: Connor - Bow)

Re: The best one in the series.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-09-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about better, but there have been plenty of times I've loved something that fandom seems to hate.

Case in point, sometimes it feels like I'm one of the few people who genuinely finds Uncharted 3 to be a great game. I think it's better than Uncharted, though not Uncharted 2.

Also, Assassin's Creed 3. Again, it isn't my favorite, but I preferred Connor to Edward and even Altair. (Not that I disliked Altair, and I think the original AssCreed has a more natural story progression, not to mention the story feels more complete, but despite that I adore Connor.) While I don't think the game-play itself is as strong as in Black Flag, I don't understand all the hate AC3 gets.

And Dragon Age 2...the absolute hatred some people have towards Dragon Age 2 is almost humorous. Origins will probably always be my favorite Dragon Age game, but I appreciated DA2 a lot more than I expected to on my replay.

Re: The best one in the series.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-09-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'd be inclined to agree with you about Uncharted 3 in a lot of aspects... the gameplay was better, the cinematics had evolved to tell a better story, the motivations for the character were laid out a little better, there was a lot more involvement with the villain...

But in a sense it became a lot less charming. Drake got more serious (he was starting to in U2, so maybe it was a natural progression) but he also lost his unique appearance/build and just kind of morphed into the generic refrigerator shooter man body which was pretty disappointing.

I mean, if you're climbing a bunch of things it actually makes sense to be lighter. I liked that they took that into account in the first game.

I like DA2 :( even more than origins and probably more than inquisition :(

I liked AC3 storywise a lot better than 4, too. Connor got to have real stakes and a lot of character progression. I didn't hate Edward or anything, but he didn't have much arc to speak of, just a lot of wandering around at random.

I just re-finished the Marathon trilogy last night and I think Marathon 2 is the best. The level design is great, unlike Marathon 1 which had some really irritating puzzles (there's one on Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap! that might be the most annoying puzzle in an FPS game ever) or Marathon Infinity which is nice-looking, architecturally, but often dumps you into some really stupid situations (and one level starts by dumping you into lava!) The story is also not a confusing mess, unlike Marathon Infinity which jerks you around a lot because of shifting timelines and weird dream sequences. (I mean, I understand what's going on in Infinity, it just took a couple plays and several re-reads of the terminals.)

Seems to me what little bit of a Marathon fandom there is agrees with me.

Hmm. Come to think of it, I think a lot of people tend to view Aliens as the best in its franchise, but I don't agree. Alien is. Aliens is a great movie, though. And while I have a soft spot for Alien 3, it's all been downhill from there.

And Silent Hill 2 is the best of the trilogy.

And Silent Hill 2 is the best of the trilogy

I'll always have the fondest memories of the first one, but as far as game design goes this statement is probably true.

It's usually the first one anyway

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's usually the first movie, though. Sequels are usually just sequels.

The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) and Aliens (which had a different director than Alien) are exceptions in that they were reinventions of the concept, and added new fans that may not have been aware of the first movie or even cared.

But then Rambo did that for First Blood and is still considered a worse movie.

Return of the Jedi? The Temple of Doom? Can't comment on SAW.

You keep saying that word - "best". I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: The best one in the series.

I liked 'The Empire Strikes Back' best, and I liked 'The Two Towers' best. I also liked the second 'Spider-Man' with Tobey Maguire. Maybe I just like middle pieces.

Except, for Indiana Jones, I think I like the first best, although I do like the Holy Grail one with him and Sean Connery, the third film.

I like both 'Alien' and 'Aliens'. I don't think I can really rank them, as they both have a different feel, they seem distinct from each other.

Oh, and 'Wrath of Khan' is far and away the best Trek film ever.

YMMV, of course.

HAHA Temple of Doom is the best? LOLOLOLOLOL everyone knows it's the Last Crusade. I love those movies dearly, but Doom is number 3.

I place RotS in with with the OT as far as best PT film. It's on par, for me, with RotJ.

I like Empire Strikes Back best, at least partly because for a long time the only one I had access to was RotJ and I got sick of it.

Last Crusade.
Voyage Home.
Aliens.
Thunderdome.

I think Return of the King, though Fellowship does have Boromir in it.
I do know however I unequivocally prefer AUJ far more than DoS or BoFA in the Hobbit movies.

Also, I still miss Sims 3 but I have grown used to Sims 4.
