Re: Things that are annoying you right now
The people using this tragedy to get their 'gun control nao' signs out of the closet and make a headline or two while they're protesting, the people taking this time to say 'Oh that bad other side, disagreeing with our knee jerk reaction! How can they be so stupid?' are the ones using this for political talking points.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 02:42 am (UTC)(link)It's not scoring cheap political points to use this to advocate gun control. Because a desire for gun control does not emerge from a vacuum. It emerges from the real feelings that people have as a result of tragedies like this. The real and emotional feelings that they have. People don't want gun control to fuck with you, or to get one over on the conservatives. They want gun control because they are sickened to death by things like this happening again and again. At least that is how I feel & how everyone pro-gun control that I talk to feels.
Now, I'm sure there are some people who are using it for stupid personal petty bullshit. But the idea that talking about gun control at a time like this is dishonorable or cheap, that is bullshit. This is exactly the time when you talk about how to stop things like this. Now if you don't think gun control is a good way to prevent something like this, that's fine, that's a legitimate disagreement. But you don't need to impugn the honor of anyone who disagrees with you to make that point for God's sake. This is absolutely a sincere reaction.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
The anti-Second Amendment crowd has no solutions. People on this board are admitting they're afraid, making rude assumptions about gun owners and enthusiasts, and calling people who don't fall in to their perfect circle jerk 'idiots.' The only suggestion they have is to take weapons away from responsible owners. When the only thing you can suggest is to punish the innocent instead of the criminals, you got nothin'. You're letting fear drive you to suggest taking away someone else's property and criminalizing their hobby.
Responsible gun owners don't want you to be shot. They want you to educate yourself. They would like you to be prepared to defend yourself, but that's up to you. 99.9% majority of gun owners are not lining up to take aim at unsuspecting passerby's. They would be the ones who protect the passerby's. The people I know who own guns, also own their own businesses and farms. They have jobs, hobbies, they go to school, a large portion of them serve or have served in the military, and they contribute. A lot of the people name-calling and protesting would be lucky to have any of that.
Your feelings, no matter how heart-felt and genuine they might be, do not determine what I can or cannot do or own.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)Second, I was not making a point about gun control. I was not saying that my feelings meant that gun control was obviously right. My point was simply that people who are advocating gun control - right or wrong - are absolutely sincere. They are not scoring political points. And it is an insult to them to imply that they are insincere and using the issue purely for selfish reasons. It was dead wrong of you to say that.
I think there is a real debate that needs to be had about gun control, & I think the context of that conversation a lot of your points have real validity. I'm not a hardliner on this - I really do respect the feelings of gun owners. I think we need to find a way to reduce the amount of times that things like this happen, and I think laws about gun control are probably an indispensable part of doing that, but we also need to deal with the people who actually own guns most of whom are different.
But at the end of the day that's not the point that I was making in any regard. The point that I was making was, simply, that people who are talking about gun control are not scoring political points. You may disagree with them but it is absolutely a sincere reaction and it is absolutely wrong to insult them by saying that they're being hypocritical or lying about it. It is absolutely, absolutely wrong.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
"I think there is a real debate that needs to be had about gun control..."
That has to happen the day of the tragedy. And has to involve people on the internet name calling, as happened in the other thread. And has to involve protesters blaming the NRA.
You say your thoughts and feelings concerning the issue are genuine. I believe you. What I don't believe is that large portions of the people who do those things I listed above have any honor for me to impugn.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 04:00 am (UTC)(link)Tragically long experience has shown that it will not happen at any other time.
And has to involve people on the internet name calling, as happened in the other thread.
I don't agree with people doing it. I think it's an expression of real feeling and inevitable, but I don't agree with it.
And has to involve protesters blaming the NRA.
Well, I mean, for God's sake, we've had how many years of the NRA virulently rejecting even any discussion of the idea of greater gun controls. It's not hard to reach a certain conclusion about the role it plays in our national political process.
You say your thoughts and feelings concerning the issue are genuine. I believe you. What I don't believe is that large portions of the people who do those things I listed above have any honor for me to impugn.
As for honor, I think some of them have it; perhaps some of them do not. I think our political process is broken and generally awful. But I don't think that on the whole the opposition to gun control is dishonorable. I don't think it is anything dishonorable in itself. And I maintain that your reaction to it went much further than could possibly be justified, I assume out of some kind of emotional reaction, but still unjustifiable.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 08:00 am (UTC)(link)you know that thing can go on with a trigger.
Re: Things that are annoying you right now
(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 03:27 am (UTC)(link)No. Not true. At all.
Nor is your belief that the gun control advocates are using this situation for "political gain". Any of the reactions here are based out of our horror and sadness at seeing this on the news AGAIN. We are feeling deep sadness for those who died. That's why we're trying to press for some sort of change. Jesus, it's only been a few months since Charleston. We shouldn't be seeing this sort of thing in the news yet again just a few short months later.
And if we can't talk about gun control after a massacre, when exactly can we discuss it? When is a good time to talk about it without it being seen as a "political tactic"? Because all that's going to happen if we don't talk about it now is that tomorrow we'll go back to babbling on about Trump or other fluff issues of no importance, and then this issue will be completely ignored...until the next mass shooting happens.
So yeah, I'd say now's about as good a time as any to bring this topic up.
