Tropes you like in some some mediums but can't stand in others

Maybe you roll your eyes at romance in movies but can't get enough of it in books.

Maybe you like ultra-violence in comics but get squeamish watching live action violence.

I love romance in fanfiction, hate it pretty much everywhere else.

Agreed

Romantic subplots in movies = okay as long as they're handled well, and can potentially be great (see: Rick & Evy in The Mummy).

Ongoing (as in lasting through multiple seasons) romantic subplots in television = NO. NO NO NO. Because they always, ALWAYS are dragged out to hell and back, full of stupid contrived melodrama, take up more space in the story than is necessary, and even the smartest most perceptive characters will become idiots where their love interests are concerned. A stable, un-melodramatic married couple or two is fine (example: Zoe/Wash), but other than that? FUCK OFF WITH THE ROMANCE SHIT.

Huh, I have this and I didn't even realise it. I don't generally mind when the Significant Eye Contact occurs between Generic Film Protagonist and the only named female in the movie, but when it starts happening in a TV show, I cringe.
Maybe it's partly because, if the romance subplot in a movie is shit, I only have to put up with it for two hours? Whereas, if I keep watching the TV show, it could keep going for... years. Literal goddamn years.

For me it's less the mediums and more the execution. I think there's ways to do love triangles without making them contrived, but unfortunately they're often, well, contrived.

Same with best friends or siblings who also seem to hate one another (which sometimes overlaps with said love triangle) - give me a reason to believe these friends/sisters/whoever still care about each other. Even Liz and Jenna from 30 Rock bothered me for this reason - not that they ever seemed to hate one another, but we were supposed to believe they were best friends even though they acted indifferent to each other 85% of the time. If they didn't, it was a special episode to remind us they were friends. (And you know, it's okay to have a TV show or a movie that isn't about the main character's closest friends. But don't sell me on something that isn't there.)

I can't handle death if it's an illness. DNW.

Unfortunately even fantasy/sci fi mediums will sometimes employ this to show not all death is supernatural. I know, but that doesn't mean I want to watch a character die of cancer.

I dislike jump scares, which fortunately is impossible to do in books.

Male protagonists bore me a lot in books, but I'm fine with them in movies. I guess it's because the POV is more involving in books + I don't watch as many movies.

How about a whole genre? I love fantasy movies and shows. Can't stand reading fantasy.

High fantasy or urban fantasy? That may make a difference.

Hrm. Well, the ones I've tried to read are LOTR, Game of Thrones, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, Harry Potter series, that series about horses that can telepathically talk to people. Never enjoyed them, even if I loved the movies/shows.

Not sure what kind of fantasy those are. I liked Good Omens and The Graveyard Book. Also Gil's All Fright Diner.

Hm. I know with LOTR, I preferred the movies because the books were more about describing the bootiful land and didn't really delve into characters very much, and I've definitely gotten that out of other fantasy novels I've tried.

Awww, first time someone mentions Valdemar in forever and they don't like it! *Pouts*

On the other hand, more people should read Gil's All Fright Diner. It's hilarious. Have you read his book Monster? I really liked the ending.

Perhaps it's the humour? What I know of your lists seem split that way.

It could also be the urban/high divide. Most of your first ones are in their own special world with its own special rules that is fairly divided from ours (yes, even Harry Potter). The second is very much set in our world, and makes sense as 'people down the street could be doing this'. That, as far as I know, is the difference between high fantasy and urban fantasy.

Huh. That makes sense! Do you have any more urban fantasy recs?

I'm more high fantasy, but I will read anything I can get my grubby little paws on, so...

Monster by A. Lee Martinez
Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Mathemagics by Margaret Ball (I think this one has a short story prequel or two, but I haven't read those and was fine)
Either of these anthologies by Esther Friesner (which might be the way to start? Then you'd know if you like the humour or the genre): Witch Way to the Mall, Strip Mauled
Temping Fate by Esther Friesner
The Sherwood Game by Esther Friesner (she's my Mom's absolute favourite, can you tell?)
E. Godz by Esther Friesner and Robert Asprin
Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner is good, but I haven't read the rest of the series.
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs as well, same as above except I read... Three? My sister owns them, but I don't live in the same city any more.
Stravaganza-City of Masks by Mary Hoffman!!! It's YA, but I loved it and the sequels.

That's all that comes to mind. Check out the blurbs, maybe ask around. I spent far too long on google looking for half-remembered books already ;) I hope at least some of these work out for you!

I dislike a lot of high-fantasy tropes, but I find Sharon Shinn's novels mildly enjoyable. I would rec them.

I can't stand the awkward plot dump in a film, and if I had a drink every time someone used the phrase 'as you knoooow' as an excuse to fill in the audience, I'd be dead now.

But I will read all the plot dumps in a book. Give me your awkwardly paced pages of personal canon, dear writer. I'll read every word.

I seem to only like power dynamics in fantasy settings. It doesn't work for me in anything else. I mean the kind of dynamics where one character is subbordinate to the other both in real life and in the bedroom.

High/Epic Fantasy - I rarely ever think movies do it right, but more often than not books and RPG computer games do it fine. Most of the time it's because such stories need more time and breadth than a movie can grant.

I like smut, but as soon as therr is sex on screen, I get a little embarrassed. A lot of that just has to do with the fact that I'm not a voyeur and I prefer sexual relations behind closed doors. It's an intimate act between consenting people and I feel the public at large has no right to see that.
