Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

I would NEVER say this to anyone's face or make assumptions about individual people... but I think a lot of young DFAB trans people on Tumblr are dealing with a lot of internalized misogyny. It feels more like they're uncomfortable with various aspects of femaleness rather than actually identifying with a different gender. Obviously this is a horrible thing to think, I'd never say it un-anon and I do always try to respect people's pronouns and identities... but seriously, I've seen so many people whose preferred pronouns are just "anything but she/her", and coupled with the age and culture of the average Tumblr user, it makes me wonder if they latch onto the idea of being transgender instead of actually examining their issues with being female. Meanwhile I have not seen the same attitude from the DMAB trans people I'm acquainted with (not saying it doesn't exist, since I don't know as many of them, but it's not something I've noticed).

yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

i'm always going to give individuals the benefit of the doubt when interacting with them

but going on my own experiences and impulses... yeaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

AGREED SO HARD.

especially because i remember my own experiences with internalized misogyny and the way i reacted to it was to dress like a dude. i even had a brief period where i wondered if i was "genderqueer". (spoilers: i was actually just gay.)

eventually i got to a more healthy place where i'm now okay with being female, and it doesn't have to mean i have to dress in certain ways or like certain things. i'm a woman, and i'm okay with that.

i can't help but think that a lot of people on tumblr are going through the same thing, but the echo chamber effect makes me wonder if they'll ever reconsider their fixed assumptions about gender. (kind of ironic that a place that prides itself on social justice is very gender essentialist...)

NAYRT

Keep in mind it may be the other way around for some male trans folks. They might be internalized misogynistic because they feel they should be men and the world keeps trying to stick them in the female box. I have FTM friends who are uncomfortable with anything female or feminine because it hits too close to home for them and what everyone kept trying to tell them what they were supposed to be. If someone calls them unmanly, they don't give a shit, but if someone calls them feminine it hits harder because that's the gender role they've spent so long trying to shed.

There's no way for us outsiders to tell which way it goes.

I dunno. The one DFAB trans person I follow online wears more makeup and high heels and more frivolous/less utilitarian clothing on days when their dysphoria hits hard. They dress in plain clothes and go without makeup on "girlish" days. I only know two out transwomen IRL and they're really, really girly/stereotypically feminine. (Of course, that doesn't rule out trans people who aren't out or aren't out to me specifically.)

I'm DFAB trans and I agree with you, especially when it comes to "trans" tumblr users who are very young or say they don't want surgery/hormones. obviously there are cost issues and other things that go into actually getting treatment but if all you have to show for your trans identity is a little blib in your sidebar– no therapist appointments, no hormones, no surgeries planned, I don't really believe you tbh. 90% of them will grow out of it or latch onto whatever other identity springs up as "cool" later. I'm looking forward to the day that genderqueer and "trans" aren't fun identities for bored teenagers to play in.
