I've only seen it once and all I remember is shirtless Sting.

Or codpiece Sting. Yeah. I had the poster. I used it to wrap a friend's Christmas present one year. She was delighted.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, that's the only thing most of us remember about it.

Were we supposed to know what was going on?

If you do want to know what's going on, the book is good.

I've read 1 and a half of the books and I still have no idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of the few times where you really DO need to read the book. There is so much underlying/complex/interwoven stuff going on that you just can't put on the screen. It's all political intrigue and backstabbing and power grabbing and, probably, even a 6 hour movie couldn't have explained it all, let alone 2ish.

That's part of the infamy of the film, I believe. It's rather dense and confusing, but so pretty.

It's Lawrence of Arabia in space.

Kind of inevitable when the movie originally was meant to be 4 hours long and then got cut to 2 hours. (I don't know if you've tried seeing any of the longer re-edits.)

Read the book or watch the miniseries. That was a much better adaption. The movie is horrible.

There actually isn't anything going on. This is a classic example of taking a series of novels and trying to condense it so much that nothing of plot remains.

Politics and magic worm poop.

I didn't think much of those books, even though I read most of them.

YANA

I must have seen the movies a dozen times they are on so often and I still don't know what's going on. My father always watches them and I always ask my parents what's going on because both my parents have read the books. They'll try to explain but inevitably they will disagree on some detail and we will all agree that we really need to (re-)read the books because doing this every time we watch the movie is ridiculous. And then we forget until the next time and I remember that I can recite some of the dialogue BUT STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. By now it's become a family tradition of sorts, tbh.

(It's about monster worms in the desert and Space Jesus. That's all I really need to know, right?)

I only went to see the movie because Brian Eno did the music.

Also Jessica Annis.

(Okay and and Sting in a winged blue leather codpiece/jockstrap.)

I liked the movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Did you see the theatrical version or the (much) longer version(s)? Because the longer version makes (some) more sense. They cut a lot out (like 40 minutes). But, really, the book is good and explains a lot, though I didn't like any of the subsequent books.

DUNE, as captured on film, follows the story of a young man named Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) who fulfills a prophecy after his exposure to the spice (Melange, which the powerful, matriarchal Bene Gesserit, who hope to further the human race through controlled breeding, and the Spacing Guild, which holds a legal monopoly on interstellar travel, rely on to help their advanced mental abilities. It also improves general health, extends life and can bestow limited prescience.) found on the Planet Arrakis, also known as DUNE. Paul becomes the mythical Kwisatz Haderach [a super-special male Bene Gesserit], a leader of Arrakis and its people, the Fremen, and sets them free from the oppressions of the Emperor of the Known Universe and his henchman, the Baron Harkonnen.

I think this retrospective/review could help. The reviewer tries the best that he can to lay out the plot.

What makes this interesting was the fact that when this film came out, movie goers were given a handout of terms that were used in the film (image sourced from reddit).

I liked this movie. I saw it first, and then read the book, which I HATED. It's still to this day the only book that I absolutely loathe. I have never hated a book as much as this one.

Still like the movie though.

Under all the bafflegab it's really simple:

Gangsters
in space
BOOOM!
A Messiah!

I've watched this movie about 30 times (last time was last Saturday, actually), and I'm still thinking I would be totally confused if I hadn't read the book. *g*

But young Kyle MacLachlan is gorgeous, and the music is awesome, and I still like it better than the remake with Alec Newman. Also, Patrick Stewart!

I saw this film in first run, not having read the book, and I freaking loved it. Then I learned that every decent SF fan hated it because they all read the book and were pissed that so much was condensed. When I said I loved it they looked at me and said, "How could you even understand it?" I said, "It's not that hard, there's an offworlder who gets pulled into the society of the native tribe and leads them to freedom--are you all unaware of literary devices or something?"

I love this movie but I also totally understand why it wasn't a box office hit.
