The car analogy gets iffy on another level, because there are a ton of laws governing driving and the usage of cars is heavily regulated. There is, in effect, strict "car control" -- and these people freak out about any form of gun control, even if said control would still allow them to keep their guns.

It's like arguing with a parrot that only knows one word.

"Could we maybe-"
"FREEDOM!"
"What if we just-"
"FREEDOM!"
"Okay, but-"
"FREEDOM!"

A lot of people were opposed to our gun laws, don't get me wrong. The government just... didn't give a shit about weirdos who wanted to sleep with their guns under their pillows?
There are still people who want to change the laws back. Most people don't vote for them though.

Your country had the benefit of not having an amendment that was up for interpretation and debate, which helped, too. Unfortunately, so long as people keep interpreting the Second Amendment as they do here in the States, that's going to be a big hurdle in changing our laws. It's a right, and damnit, people are going to cling to that right no matter what!

(Never mind the fact that the very amendment the pro-gun side loves to quote expressly refers to, "a well-regulated militia". My guess is our founding fathers wouldn't have put that particular phrase in just for the hell of it, but hey...)

Lol. Ah yes, and there were no dinosaurs because they weren't in the bible.

Narrow literal interpretations of things that were written a long-ass time ago never end up sounding very intelligent. I wonder why.

Oh, and FYI, fox news, we still have guns. If you are interested in competitive shooting, you can even have your own. The reason we don't have as many guns as America is because people are rarely interested enough to go through the process of applying and then keeping up their gun club membership.

Indeed, it's quite eerie sometimes how similar the Bible and the Constitution are in terms of how they're interpreted/misinterpreted. It often seems people who take the word of the Bible very seriously and literally also tend to be the same way with our Constitution. Because who cares that times change, right? What people centuries ago said stays regardless!

Oh, and FYI, fox news, we still have guns. If you are interested in competitive shooting, you can even have your own.

*Waves hands* Shhhh! They can't let your pesky facts get in the way of their narrative!

GUNS! WE HAVE GUNS! DO YOU HEAR ME, FOX NEWS?

America and Australia both have dodgy, shameful, violent pasts.

I think I prefer our current way of doing things. It's a little more reasonable. If we had an intelligent discussion about what our needs are concerning firearms today, I think most people would agree that things are different now.

Who wants to be sensible though, really?

Re: Oh Fox News...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's the funny part-wasn't Australia essentially founded by criminals, shipped there from other parts of the world? If a country with those sorts of iffy beginnings can sort themselves out on this issue, surely we can, too.

And regarding the current/past discussion, that's another thing-it'd be a tough haul for any pro-gun people battling the government today if it came to that. In the 1700s, the government and the citizens were at least a little more closely matched in terms of weaponry. Nowadays our government can let loose a nuke with one push of the button, and they have drones as well. Do the "FREEDOM! SECOND AMENDMENT!" people seriously think they'll be able to put up a good fight against that?

I guess the "guns to fend off the government" thing also confuses me because, yes, our federal government is fucked up and corrupt most, if not all, of the time. Yes, there are some scary people who have worked, and are working, in it. I'm certainly not going to disagree with that.

But I still don't feel a need to arm myself against them. I don't really buy into paranoia and conspiracy theories to begin with, and the corruption that does exist, I don't see it as extreme enough to where I'd need to arm up for battle. I don't think we're on the verge of tyranny by any stretch. Frankly, I think a lot of our government officials just aren't that bright enough to where they could create that kind of government even if they wanted to :p (the fact that they often seem very confused about the difference between socialism, communism, and tyranny is proof of that).

And if we did get to a tyrannical state someday, certainly I'd do my part to try and combat it where possible, but I still don't see myself grabbing a gun to do so. There's all sorts of ways to rebel out there.

Yes and no, criminals and opportunists. It was a penal colony (lololol penal), but when news reached England, and subsequently other countries that we had a fuckload of natural resources (coal, timber) and an unknown amount of gold that nobody was claiming for themselves, people started coming here in big numbers to get rich quick.

Some of my family came here to grow fruit originally, because they heard the soil was good. My other great-grandfather was a con artist though. He supposedly left England because the cops were after him for something. So yes. We were all criminals.

The weird militant survivalists probably do think they could go up against the army. It's like the sad middle-aged version of Home Alone.

You mean you're not paranoid? You aren't preoccupied with conspiracy theories? D:
Do you... are you talking about... peaceful protest and petitions? Surely not!

... I love that description. It's perfect. Now I'm going to be giggling every time I hear about gun debate in America.

Yeah, haha, the word "freedom" has pretty much lost its meaning in these debates. Ignores the distinction between "freedom to" and "freedom from" (rights and responsibilities) as part of a democratic society with mutual obligations, but that's libertarians for you.

I haven't seen many gun lobby types in Australia recently though I'm sure they're out there. I would have assumed they would be in the Top End where I used to live, but no. So many people hunted, they had the guns they wanted anyway, I guess. Still not a gun-crazy environment.

I do think social cohesion, a sense of collective responsibility, a well-functioning democracy, affluence, welfare, belonging, all that, goes a LONG way towards making a society safer. I feel like gun deaths are as much of a symptom as a cause of a lot of problems in the US.

I feel like gun deaths are as much of a symptom as a cause of a lot of problems in the US.

I'll definitely agree with this. The fact that some people get to a point in their lives where they feel the need to solve their problems with others with guns in the first place is a massive sign something isn't right somewhere.

In NSW we have the Shooters and Fishers Party.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooters_and_Fishers_Party
I think they're in a few other states as well.

Let's not forget Katter, too!

Hell, violent deaths are a symptom of problems here, too. I would like more information about where Turnbull's domestic violence money is going. From what I understand, not enough is going to crisis centres and community programs. It's going to the police.

Oh yeah THEM. I'd always have fun debating where to put them on the Senate preferences - at the bottom, or should that be the Citizen's Electoral Council, or just the Liberals? They lobbied successfully for hunting in NSW national parks, right?

I haven't kept up with the news about Turnbull's turnaround on funding. Right. Huh. I know that intervention orders are really not that effective in practice, and the police often arrive too late if not at all. I know that shelter funding was gutted by Abbott, so I really hope that some of that is going to be reinstated, but yeah, is it two women a week killed by their male partner/ex here? Something like that.

Ughhhh. Those people. Yes they want amateurs to be allowed to shoot unsupervised in national parks. They got support from Barry O'Farrell because he wanted them in on the power privatisation thing.

I think it is two a week. :(
