yes. but if i had to say when it became a thing thing i would say mariah's fantasy remix featuring ODB. which is brilliant imo. "me and mariah go back like babies and pacifiers" RIP ODB.

It's kind of always been around in hip hop. The mainstream may have taken notice of it in '95, but people like TLC and Bell Biv Devoe were doing it even earlier in the 90s. Hell, I think there might have even been a "rap" section in an old Shanice song.

yes, i meant mainstream. mariah was definitely packaged as a sweet, squeaky clean MAINSTREAM pop star when the fantasy remix came out. who do you think influenced record labels in putting rappers on pop tracks more, mariah or TLC or shanice? heck i remember that shanice song and i don't think i ever heard the rap section on pop radio or mtv.
