Yay another reason to not like him. Ever since it became public that his great-great-great-grandfather used slave labour on their sugar plantations and BumAlienFace made it clear he didn't give a shit about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, for real?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. One of his Granddad's slaves descendants holds office in NYC. He is pretty gross.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not his grandfather, it's his great-great-great-grandfather.

And, I mean, I'm not saying it's the right attitude to take, but I'm saying it doesn't make him a bad person in and of itself

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but when you directly profit from enslaving other human beings and act like it's not a big deal that makes you a bad person. And that is where all of his family money came from.

Of course he doesn't care. Why should he? No one is responsible for something their ancestors did. Especially one so far removed. Do you want him to go back in time and dropkick his grandfather??

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He should probably care that it happened, but it's not like he did it, so he shouldn't have to apologize or anything.

I mean, let's be realistic here, probably every single one of us has an ancestor that did something fucked up. Probably hundreds of them.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Many of us are descendants of Ghengis Khan evidently.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
A disturbingly large number of us are descended from rapists.

Stop being stupid. There is no requisite to wear sack cloth and ashes for some great (multiple times) grandparent. He's dine multiple movies involving slavery and has mentioned in press junkets it was a regrettable part of his family history.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize that at some point in history your ancestors have quite likely murdered other people, raped kids and/or fucked horses?

[personal profile] philippos42 2015-10-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucked horses?

Horses?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
look, humans are weird. OK?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not everyone's ancestors were goatherds.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a lot of us are descended from Genghis Khan, and he couldn't always get nubile young virgins to impregnate okay?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Sheep were not always available.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is ridiculous, everyone's ancestors did horrendous things at some point in history. Somewhere, some time, you are the end product of rape and pillage, slavery and bloodlust.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the DailyFail (I know, I know), his mother urged him not to use his actual surname as his stage name for fear of being a target for reparations from descendants of slaves.

Cucumberpatch also said doing Amazing Grace was a "sort of apology" for his ancestry.

Take from that what you will.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
According to an interview with Cumberbatch, he planned to use his dad's stage name because it was his dad's stage name, but his friends told him no one would ever forget Cumberbatch and he'd be stupid not to. Which sounds like a much likelier story than anything printed in the Daily Fail.

Why would the actions of a man he never met from generations ago have anything to do with him?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Inheriting money and class privilege is not nothing here. Why does meeting/interacting with someone have to be the standard for whether a person is tainted by influence or not?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because everything good in your life, literally every advantage, every benefit, everything positive you have can be traced back directly to someone's suffering. And will likely, if you follow it forward, lead directly to someone else's suffering. We are not our circumstance. we are our choices. You are not tainted by the suffering of the people who came before you, you are tainted by the suffering you choose to inflict whether your descended from slavers pirates rapists or murderers.

Why would he? He wasn't around back then and it doesn't affect him. I mean, I'm sure he feels some kind of "Oh shit, yeah, that's bad." But that may be ALL you might ever get out of him. Cause...seriously, at this point in time, who honestly cares?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, I'm gonna say it - I don't care what my my family did three or four or five generations ago (if I even had any way of checking it). I've never met the people, I'm not responsible for any of it, it would be nice if they had been lovely people but I'm not going to spend much time apologising for them. The important thing is to be decent person here and now - that's something I have influence on.
