Health Insurance

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That time of the year again. The Marketplace has started sending me health insurance notices. And since I got a raise at work, I'll only be getting like $30 of help this year. Which means I can't afford any plans that will cover medication (cheapest being $141 a month). So now I have to figure out if I should ask my boss to lower how much I earn or not. YAY!

I've seriously thought about marrying someone who makes little money just so that I can get more money to pay for insurance. But I am not sure how illegal that is.

I loath health insurance. This is my first month with Marketplace insurance. I have the most expensive one we can afford.

And today I've been fighting them because they are calling my generic inhaler (the only generic rescue inhaler) a tier 3 drug even though it is generic and therefore charging the higher copay. Given that my meds all together cost me $100 even with copays, that extra 15 makes a difference.

And as for being illegel, the only thing it is illegal to marry for is immigration benefits (which is a whole other rant I could go into.

Wow, my fiance's mom has had issues here lately with Blue Cross, Blue Shield because they say her rescue inhaler is not approved and that she has to use theirs (which she HAS used before and it doesn't work nearly as well). Thing is, they never informed her of this change, so she's suing them for it. It's a little more complicated than what I just wrote, but I can't remember the other details.

She's severely asthmatic and without a rescue inhaler, she can likely die from this.

I actually found out there is no generic rescue inhaler. Mine is the cheapest there is, but they are all patented at the moment and not generic. Which is a whole other rant I could go into about how supposedly the old, generic ones were bad for the environment when they were only slightly bad and the current ones are just as bad. The the pharmaceutical company lobby convinced Congress to outlaw them so they could make patents on the new ones and charge a bundle.

It's not illegal, but kinda immoral.

I'm down for it though. Lowers my cost of living too. Meet me at the courtroom tomorrow at 5 for those sweet sweet benefits.

So it ISN'T illegal? Huh. I wonder how much getting a pre-nup and all that shit it. Would we have to live together? I mean, I could marry a woman and have an open marriage type of thing.

Most US states consider adultery (which is still technically what an open marriage is) a misdemeanor, and some consider it a felony. So be careful, there. Piss off your benefits-spouse and things could go haywire.

I doubt anyone, ANYONE gets arrested for it. It is just one of those old laws that has not been removed from the books.

Was he convicted? If not...eh.

Because being arrested, jailed and either having to bail yourself out (which is rarely cheap) or just sit there until a court date is no big deal, right? There's no way that could cause problems financially or socially.

Arrest records can actually hurt you even if you are never convicted of anything.

As I mentioned above, the only thing you can't marry for is immigration benefits. You can marry for health insurance, for money, for housing, for anything else.

I've never really understood why people are so against this sort of thing. Who says marriage needs to be motivated by love? If there are all these financial gains that come from it, why are they not a valid reason to go get a government-issued license that isn't dependent on private feelings that they don't ask about?

I don't get it either. I have so many feelings on the fact that people can't marry for immigration benefits and that the system calls that a "fraudulent marriage." How is that fraud?

Considering that marriage was originally used for securing beneficial partnerships and other relations in the past, not to mention that whole dowry bullshit, I have NO idea why this is seen as so bad nowadays.

The difference these days is that you can CHOOSE to do so rather than being forced to do so.

Depending on your employer, the amount they take out for insurance isn't that bad. Of course if you work for a small business than you are pretty much screwed. I'm so glad I work for a university, they only take out 1.5 % of my pay for insurance and frankly with my health, this more than makes up for it. I get a great package too.
