It's not illegal, but kinda immoral.

I'm down for it though. Lowers my cost of living too. Meet me at the courtroom tomorrow at 5 for those sweet sweet benefits.

So it ISN'T illegal? Huh. I wonder how much getting a pre-nup and all that shit it. Would we have to live together? I mean, I could marry a woman and have an open marriage type of thing.

Most US states consider adultery (which is still technically what an open marriage is) a misdemeanor, and some consider it a felony. So be careful, there. Piss off your benefits-spouse and things could go haywire.

I doubt anyone, ANYONE gets arrested for it. It is just one of those old laws that has not been removed from the books.

Because being arrested, jailed and either having to bail yourself out (which is rarely cheap) or just sit there until a court date is no big deal, right? There's no way that could cause problems financially or socially.

Arrest records can actually hurt you even if you are never convicted of anything.

As I mentioned above, the only thing you can't marry for is immigration benefits. You can marry for health insurance, for money, for housing, for anything else.

I've never really understood why people are so against this sort of thing. Who says marriage needs to be motivated by love? If there are all these financial gains that come from it, why are they not a valid reason to go get a government-issued license that isn't dependent on private feelings that they don't ask about?

I don't get it either. I have so many feelings on the fact that people can't marry for immigration benefits and that the system calls that a "fraudulent marriage." How is that fraud?

I wish the state would just butt out of marriage. but that's a whole 'nother 'nother rant.

Considering that marriage was originally used for securing beneficial partnerships and other relations in the past, not to mention that whole dowry bullshit, I have NO idea why this is seen as so bad nowadays.

The difference these days is that you can CHOOSE to do so rather than being forced to do so.
