I also really love the Maiar and Valar. I wish there was much more information on all the Ainur. I really love people interacting with them, exploring their impact on the world, their creation of the world, how they might think, how they come to decisions on when to act or not, how the elves and men think of them - all of it is super interesting.

That said, I'm really not a fan of Gandalf. I think he's interesting the way a Machiavellian character could be but I don't find him likeable. I do wonder about the two missing blue wizards, and I find the two different takes on how they did or did not achieve their mission to be very interesting. It would be interesting to see more of the fates of the remaining 4 wizards in ME. And, I would like to see Gandalf as Olórin, as I think he would be a very different character.

Basically, I agree. :)

On your comment about Gandalf, I don't think he's Machiavellian, but he has to keep so many secrets that from the POV of others, particularly some of those he has to keep secrets from, he surely seems like it.

(I have RP'd this sort of POV, quite a bit.)

Which is why I said he was interesting LIKE a Machiavellian character.

I'd love to see more about Radagast. (Book version, not movie.)

Gandalf is boss, but tbh I haven't read a lot of LOTR fic. I have read some Legolas/Gimli (I couldn't resist) and some gen friendship fic starring Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, but that's about it. It was always hard for me to find fic I liked in LOTR fandom.

I had an easier time finding fic I liked in The Hobbit fandom and I think part of it might have been that my standards were lower. (Not saying I would read anything, but my love for LOTR is deeper than my Hobbit love. Never finished Silmarillion and haven't read Unfinished Tales so I can't speak of those fandoms, but from what I hear people are a tad obsessed with Melkor and Sauron. You like what you like though, and they are big parts of the story.)

The blue wizards would be interesting to read about, but to cover their mission it would largely be set in locations not covered by The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.

For Radagast I mostly see shorter character pieces. How he ended up straying from protecting the people of Middle Earth and instead focused on the animals. Maybe a travel log of what he had been doing the hundreds of years he wandered around. Or what he did after the ring was destroyed. Did he stay on Middle Earth or did he have people he wanted to reunite with in the Undying Lands?

If we write about Gandalf with the narrative focusing on his crusade to stop Morgoth's return...oh boy. So many plots, networking, giving people like Thorin a push to do things that potentially benefit Gandalf's long term goals.

Gandalf is not interested in making Frodo a sacrifice like Dumbledore was with Harry. Gandalf also trusts those he is aligned with more. However, he is not shy about nudging people into dangerous situations if it helps the mission.

I took a Tolkien class in college and have to say, researching on the Ishtari was sooooo fascinating

I would love to read more about the Ainur, though more about the relationships and politics in Valinor.

Gandalf, not so much, for reasons that I favour characters who, while not being Evil, might end up at odds with Gandalf. People like Survived-the-BoFA-Kíli, Boromir, and a Maedhros and Maglor who are still alive (for Finwion reasons).
