She pressures you individually?

Like if she's just plugging it repeatedly on her blog or whatever, fine. But it's so... weird to me that she'd continually ask a specific person to commission her.

Oh well the context is we're fandom friends on IM as well and sometimes she talks about being a Poor College Student and I express sympathy and then she links me to her commissions page and asks me to commission her.

To be fair we talk about other things too and obviously I haven't shared my opinions on fanfic commissioning with her, but whenever she brings it up, I just cringe.

Furthermore, I don't think she can make enough to solve her financial problems with her commission rates, but I guess every little bit helps?

If she's a poor college student who's trying to live off commissions, it makes way more sense to offer commissions for a large fandom. Not even artists who offer commissions get away with "but only in this tiny fandom."

the thing about that is that, it seems like it's easier for fanartists to get commissions rather than writers. fanfic is dubious enough, especially when it comes time to sell it. would you rather pay $10 for a hand drawn piece of art (whether digital or not) or $10 for a fanfic that you may not even more than once? :\

Plus fandom in general tends to have more good ficcers than good artists.

That being said, people who draw well sometimes can't write for shit. One of the manga series that got me into the medium is a collaboration between author and artist and geez, I can definitely understand (after looking at the artist's later works) why they paired up with a writer.

yep! and if they post their fanfics for free...!

absolutely. i would love to pair up with an artist and create a webcomic together but, for right now, i'm just gonna try to get a little extra on the side!

Then she probably does offer commissions for other fandoms. But I doubt most people who offer fic/art commissions are trying to get by off of that. Just some supplementary income -- even the more expensive fanartists... IDK it might be a lot of money for a college student but definitely not enough to support a family (where I live).

"Oh well the context is we're fandom friends on IM as well and sometimes she talks about being a Poor College Student and I express sympathy and then she links me to her commissions page and asks me to commission her."

I'm sorry, but that is tacky and obnoxious as fuck. I'd cringe if a friend did that once, never mind on a regular basis. You'd be doing her a huge favor if you gently took her aside and let her know that when people sympathize with your situation, shoving a begging cup into their face is not really a good idea.

If you were feeling more blunt, I'd point out that she'd probably be better off financially if she took the time she spent writing fanfic and got a part time job instead. Guaranteed pay.

Passing through flatmeme, I'd gotten the impression somehow commission friend was a parent. But no, she's just another struggling student. Unemployment rates in many places are high, but college students are going to have a much better chance than many, and will probably make bank in a few years anyway. In which case, fuck her, if she's really that struggling, she's going to compromise between her creative ~ideals and making ends meet. Pestering and guilting people into helping you live the creative dream under the guise of no-choice poverty is a dick move.

Maybe she just wants you to spread the word and reblogged that she's taking commissions?

If she's really repeatedly asking you for money in such an uncomfortable way, after you already said no, I'm not sure of how much of a friend of yours she really is. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If you have more money than her, and you want to, you could just outright offer her a gift of money, if that's where your relationship really is. Not sure I'd still be her friend if she took it, but at least it would resolve things.

Your friend sounds like she means well, but is socially clueless about how her behavior comes off. You should really tell her that straight up asking people for money isn't polite. Chances are that if she's really hard up, there are more efficient ways to earn money than via fanfic commissions. I understand that for a lot of people in fandom, getting paid to write fanfic is living the dream but nobody is entitled to have other people fund their hobbies.
