Single/married characters that have kids later in the series tend to turn me away. I just can't adjust to the character dynamic change.

If they start off with kids, I don't mind.

Yeah, I agree with this. I'm trying to think of couples that had kids where I liked the kids, and that's not too common, but if they start out as parents it's ok.
And some families in media are just the best.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm like that about certain characters. It changes the dynamic too much.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? Because this is exactly how I feel about parent characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What a weird thing to get hung up on.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
No. If that is made a point in a fanfic, it's a good indication that the author is focusing on things I'm not interested in.

wait, is this secret about fanfic?

The DBZ characters worked for me, but that was in part because I love Trunks and am glad he exists.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I would say Dragon Ball to DBZ too, but Goku was dead/on a different planet more often than he was around Gohan.

DBZ didn't get side-tracked into stories about ordinary life, instead using time-travel and time-skips to make the children of an age where they could be fighters as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes a character being a parent is what makes them golden to me.

Like Batman. Batdad is my life.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
It helps if the kids are interesting characters themselves, unfortunately a lot of times it doesn't work out so well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree with OP, but Batman is a huge exception, yes. He'd be significantly less interesting and more irritating if he didn't have kids.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
When characters have kids that usually seems to be the time I lose interest too. Unless it's a really interesting family dynamic, usually it's just because they settled down and they don't do interesting things anymore.

I guess it's that way in real life. People always say once you get married and have kids you can't have fun on your own anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Then "people" don't know what they are talking about. I've been a parent nearly 27 years and have managed just fine having fun on my own all that time.

It really sucks when characters become parents and then their character development halts there and revolves completely around their child (Jim/Pam from The Office come to mind). Or when a character is completely centric around their offspring from the get-go. But there are tons of great, well-written parent characters.

I don't mind characters having kids in and of itself, but I do hate it when a character suddenly turns into a different person because of becoming a parent and stops being what made me like them originally in favor of being Generic Parent Character # 489724576.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't like when a fic gives characters kids and turns them into Mary Sue parents, domestic god/goddesses and all saccharine goodness. When often, the characters would be awful parents. Or at least not perfect ones.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Like Moffat did with River Song. She's deeeeaaaaad, but it's okay sssshhh since she's finally settled down with kids and flowy feminine white dresses!

I get really pissed if a fic doesn't warn for kids and SURPRISE THERE ARE CHILDREN

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I think that may be exactly the issue I have with most parent fic. I don't find children interesting in and of themselves, and so many people seem to treat them as shorthand for a good, lasting relationship or as the endgame goal for a happily ever after.

To me it seems that a lot of ships really shouldn't be having kids, either because their lifestyles are not conductive to raising them (yanno, if they’re constantly in danger or frequently without food and/or shelter by choice) or because they themselves would make terrible parents.

I'm the opposite and enjoy parents in fiction, but it also depends on how the parent is handled (like if their only role in the story is to be the parent of a character or if they are an actual character themselves).

If they've always been a parent then it wont bother me, and hell I love some of the parental figures in the media I've watched, and even people having kids if it's been stated previously that they want them wont bug me.

It's when characters that originally weren't interested in kids suddenly have them that turns me off and I loose interest.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like parent characters if they have babies. The whole thing just gets boiled down into a lame baby plot... yeah, babies cry, feed the baby, burp the baby, baby baby baby I don't give a shit.

If it's about children who are old enough to have a personality or adult children and their parents they can have an interesting dynamic. But usually the show will start with that premise rather than suddenly having babies.

Basically suddenly having babies is the part I have a problem with.
