It bugs me when people do this, too. Especially if they make a huge deal about giving credit to the artists, but still reblog uncredited work. But people on tumblr often have the attitude of well, I'm just reblogging so it's not my problem.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Or don't credit other types of work. Photography's not worthy, apparently.

(Asking permission to jp artist's is also an issue, because it's common for people to lie about getting it, and some artists get flooded with permission requests and that makes them feel uncomfortable.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Theft of jp art was an issue before tumblr but it got so much worse since tumblr is around.

If they would really just repost the art on their blogs because they appreciate it they could as well post links to art sites. But that's not how one gets reblogs.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
People are SO BAD about proper credit for photography. Even people who scrupulously include links and credits in their own posts still reblog posts with pics taken from weheartit or pinterest. SMH

I understand your feelings.

But then, it's tumblr, people there will do anything for more reblogs and an increasement of followers.

And I really don't have the feeling that the fact that more people add the source of the art has any effect. Any time I see another Pixiv account deletet I ask myself if the reason for this was another case of unallowed art-posting by some tumblr attention whore.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand Tumblr. Why do they repost the art instead of linking to Pixiv? The quality is better.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So they get notes and followers.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because today everything that counts is more followers and more reblogs.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, when something on tumblr doesn't have a source, your options are basically, reblog it without the source or don't reblog it at all. There is no middle option (tineye helps sometimes, but is far from reliable). So I can't blame people for saying, "This is really cool and I want it on my page. Reblog." I don't think that's hypocritical. What they're saying is, when you have the option to include a source, INCLUDE THE FUCKING SOURCE. Because if you don't, everyone who reblogs it from you won't have that option.

I'm that way about Pinterest. When it's my pin, I always say who the art is by and I always link back to the source. But if I see a great pin without attribution, of course I pin it anyway. Because I'm not some kind of Pinterest martyr, denying myself all the cool pins in the name of artistic credit and changing absolutely nothing for my troubles.

This, though I have usually tried to to reverse google search the pretty thing first to get credit back, because whoever took or removed credit in the first place annoys me.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have usually tried to to reverse google search

I...actually didn't know you could do that. Because I am bad at the internet. The only thing I knew about was Tineye, which is a pain in that ass and rarely works. From now on I'll try reverse google searching instead.

I have Chrome in my browser so right clicking and selecting that option is pretty easy. (Other browsers have extensions I think.) If I was using the tumblr app on a tablet it would be a major PITA to try to do this, so I probably wouldn't bother, or just not reblog it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Holy fucking shit. I think I earn the communal dunce cap for the day, because I didn't even know that option was there! Thank you for pointing this out to me!

wait, can I still say 'dunce cap'? I have no idea with some of this stuff anymore, I really don't.

Nah it's not like most of us get a 101 to the net and new tech, we just sort of scattergun figure it out as we go along :)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
You can also make a good faith effort to track down the source via reverse google search, as someone else has mentioned. But honestly, I don't see the big deal about not reblogging. This isn't a matter of life or death here, it's a tumblr reblog (or a Pinterest pin). If you feel strongly about artist credit, then not perpetuating the problem by not reblogging uncredited work is hardly a major sacrifice and painting it that way is absurd.

But honestly, I don't see the big deal about not reblogging.

Well, I don't know about Tumblr, but on Pinterest you may as well not have an account if you only pin things with sources. The site becomes unusable very fast that way. So if you don't care about having an online archive for keeping track of cool images, then nah, no big deal. But if you really like some of the stuff you find online and want to have a place where you can keep track of it all, then yes, it's a pretty big sacrifice.

I personally have spent...god, IDEK, twenty hours, thirty hours in the past couple of years trying to track down attributive info for cool stuff that has been pinned without any. Which, even figuring for ones time being worth minimum wage, equals out to about $2500 dollars worth of my time. Painting that as no big deal is - how did you put it? Oh, right, absurd.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
*$250

Typo. Point stands.

If I made $100 per hour I think I'd just as soon hire somebody to hunt down sources for me. I mean, since we're speaking of absurdities.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't call it "no big deal" because I'm disputing whether or not your time is valuable. I'm calling it no big deal because maintaining your Pinterest page is not a matter of life or death. It's a fun activity, and like many fun activities, not at all necessary for life.

Also? Acting like having a Pinterest page is soooooooo important is absurd as well.

Actually, for artists who promote themselves via social media including Pinterest, time is money with every platform you add into your networking. Depending on your brand, choosing to credit others who you sprinkle amongst your own work, might be important.

But yeah, it's just a fun thing for most *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a semi-big deal to not have a way of storing things you like. How is that so hard for you to grasp?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
That drawing looks like Sans in a wig

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why but I just cannot bring myself to give a shit about crediting artists. I don't even have a tumblr and I've never done it myself, but as long as they're not claiming it as their own, or trying to make money off it, I don't care if someone reposts something without credit.

Like, people are fine pirating movies and songs and shit all day long, and condemn companies for trying to stifle freedom of information and all that stuff, but those same people absolutely lose your shit if you don't properly credit an artist for their 2 minutes scribble you found on an imageboard and thought was cute. I don't get it.

I dunno, I just think it's kind of arrogant and douchey to expect to have to much control over your work once you've willingly given it to people on the internet. I've had my art show up in all sorts of weird places online, often uncredited, and I was just super happy that people were enjoying it. I'm not convinced by the argument that the artist loses out from it either. Again, it's like piracy. Companies claim they're losing sales but so many more people are being exposed to their work than otherwise would have, if anything it probably increases sales. I know I've spent shitloads on things I only found out about through piracy. Similarly, getting reposted on places like 4chan and facebook has hugely boosted the popularity of so many artists. If people like the art they'll find the source.
