The thing is, when something on tumblr doesn't have a source, your options are basically, reblog it without the source or don't reblog it at all. There is no middle option (tineye helps sometimes, but is far from reliable). So I can't blame people for saying, "This is really cool and I want it on my page. Reblog." I don't think that's hypocritical. What they're saying is, when you have the option to include a source, INCLUDE THE FUCKING SOURCE. Because if you don't, everyone who reblogs it from you won't have that option.

I'm that way about Pinterest. When it's my pin, I always say who the art is by and I always link back to the source. But if I see a great pin without attribution, of course I pin it anyway. Because I'm not some kind of Pinterest martyr, denying myself all the cool pins in the name of artistic credit and changing absolutely nothing for my troubles.

This, though I have usually tried to to reverse google search the pretty thing first to get credit back, because whoever took or removed credit in the first place annoys me.

I...actually didn't know you could do that. Because I am bad at the internet. The only thing I knew about was Tineye, which is a pain in that ass and rarely works. From now on I'll try reverse google searching instead.

I have Chrome in my browser so right clicking and selecting that option is pretty easy. (Other browsers have extensions I think.) If I was using the tumblr app on a tablet it would be a major PITA to try to do this, so I probably wouldn't bother, or just not reblog it.

You can also make a good faith effort to track down the source via reverse google search, as someone else has mentioned. But honestly, I don't see the big deal about not reblogging. This isn't a matter of life or death here, it's a tumblr reblog (or a Pinterest pin). If you feel strongly about artist credit, then not perpetuating the problem by not reblogging uncredited work is hardly a major sacrifice and painting it that way is absurd.

Well, I don't know about Tumblr, but on Pinterest you may as well not have an account if you only pin things with sources. The site becomes unusable very fast that way. So if you don't care about having an online archive for keeping track of cool images, then nah, no big deal. But if you really like some of the stuff you find online and want to have a place where you can keep track of it all, then yes, it's a pretty big sacrifice.

I personally have spent...god, IDEK, twenty hours, thirty hours in the past couple of years trying to track down attributive info for cool stuff that has been pinned without any. Which, even figuring for ones time being worth minimum wage, equals out to about $2500 dollars worth of my time. Painting that as no big deal is - how did you put it? Oh, right, absurd.

I don't call it "no big deal" because I'm disputing whether or not your time is valuable. I'm calling it no big deal because maintaining your Pinterest page is not a matter of life or death. It's a fun activity, and like many fun activities, not at all necessary for life.

Also? Acting like having a Pinterest page is soooooooo important is absurd as well.

Actually, for artists who promote themselves via social media including Pinterest, time is money with every platform you add into your networking. Depending on your brand, choosing to credit others who you sprinkle amongst your own work, might be important.

But yeah, it's just a fun thing for most *shrug*
