I don't think it's necessarily the same people clamoring for "good story telling" who are confused, but eh... /shrug

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Because I see a definite overlap between people who say they want a "good story" and people who want to know everything RIGHT NOW and it better put all of their personal issues above all else and treat them perfectly from the get-go, otherwise "-isms!-phobias! Terrible people!"

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
SA
Not to mention "they should have done more to explicitly state that (clearly wrong behavior) is wrong!!"

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That is such a pet peeve of mine. They want it to be more preachy? Really?

Everything after "RIGHT NOW" seems like a different complaint than OP's.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Well that myst just be a failing of mine, because I am the OP.

sometimes it's just really bad storytelling tho.

i find the stupider people are the ones who complain about plotholes constantly (and misuse the term completely) and characters being OOC (what they mistake character development for)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people over-identify with characters and become convinced that their interpretation is the true one, and the original has become out of character. That can be tiring to encounter.

I've not come across the OP's issue with criticism of any complex storyline at all as not good storytelling.

Why do I have the feeling this is a Doctor Who issue?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. That baby is a major plot point from the new season of Supernatural.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP used a Supernatural mark on the baby (the new season has that) so they're probably an SPN fan.)

Oooooh, how I hate how people complain about "OOC characters" in canon. Uh, it's canon now.

Plus, do they never do something slightly quirky or unlike what they usually do daily? "Rob had TEA. It's out of character!!!"

I think that there are rare occasions where a work will have a character "become" ooc, in that they diverge dramatically from what had been set up before, or spontaneously lose a characteristic for no discernible reason (which for me at least, will often lead me to lose interest in the work).
But this sort of thing is very rare.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not always even a rare thing, but yeah.

On the other hand, it's a tad asinine when canon characterization contrsdicts popular but baseless fanon, and then countless fans complain about the canon characterization being supposedly OOC...

yeah i think a character can get occ when the author is trying to make the plot work so they have the character do something that's out of line with what they'd normal do or believe in.

and then there are somethings with a lot of writers working on it where not everyone's on the same page.

i don't think it's that rare.

And sometimes it's people with short attention spans or poor reading comprehension, who can't get from point A to C without a map.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, this. When people complain about not knowing what's going on during ep. 2 of a 22 episode season, I just roll my eyes. Like? If you don't get it at the end, sure, complain away, but there's supposed to be unanswered questions and mysteries at the beginning.

(Note that this doesn't mean that if you don't like it that you should watch until it gets good, since I hate that argument. Just that if you're confused by a plot of a season long show in the first few eps... maybe you're supposed to be confused.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kinda agree. I see many TV fans who want to analyze everything, but somehow have a lot of difficulty dealing with ambiguous scenes that let people draw their own conclusions, or stories that use symbolism or subtlety instead of spelling everything out. Everything has to have one DEFINITIVE meaning, or else it's not "good". It makes TV discussions very tedious sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
YES YES YES.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ambiguity is a crutch for writers whose editors divorced them. Leaving all of the conclusions to the audience is an excuse to avoid writing an ending, and it empowers an already ridiculously entitled population to treat whatever insane bullshit comes into their heads as the Word of God.

I've gotten to the point where I'm just amused every time I see the word "entitled". There's usually a way to turn it around. Like here, I could say you're entitled for expecting them to create the kind of ending you like instead of the one they wanted to create. Is there anyone at all who wouldn't have a significant group of people calling them entitled these days?

You seem like one of those people that needs an A to Z Guide and annotated Cliff's Notes.

It's not really an all or nothing thing, though. A writer can answer some, even most, questions, and provide some conclusions, while leaving some ambiguities and letting some issues stay unresolved. And I think doing that leads to a better ending than going to either of the extremes (i.e. total ambiguity or total resolution).

Ugh, yeah. I love when things have multiple interpretations and angles.

(on a shallow note, I don't understand why FFVII fans don't embrace the fact that both cloti and cleris can be considered canon. Everything is canon! Rejoice!)

ot, this pic is terrible.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
A related comment, anon. I've been absolutely astonished at the way my fanfic has been dropping hints here and there about reveals to come and nobody guesses a damn thing.
