lol is your pairing as boring as bottled water?

Pretty sure that's a portmanteau from Les Mis.

Valjean/Javert

Pretty sure OP knew that and picked it up to mock it

What, you don't appreciate the majesty of Clotiris or Snotacon?

Haha, good ones!

Eh. They can make it easier to search for pairings because sometimes the "/" can fuck up search engines.

You can't take them seriously and that's what makes them great. They're delightfully stupid.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to think shipper portmanteaus were all just immature, but now I take more of a situational approach to them. Some texts and their fandoms are simply too serious for portmanteaus to feel at all suitable. Also, some characters don't have names that lend themselves well to portmanteaus, and I don't think a portmanteau should be forced into existence. (Eg. Caskett works for Beckett/Castle - it's a fluffy show and the names go well together. OTOH Brooth from Brennan/Booth is pretty horrible - it's also a fluffy show, but the portmanteau is super forced.)

What really changed my mind about portmanteaus was when I got into the Sherlock fandom. Almost all the names lend themselves well to portmanteaus, and most of the portmanteaus aren't too stupid sounding (with the exception of Sherlolly). Plus, the Sherlock fandom has always been - for better or worse - a bit batshit, so it doesn't feel incredibly out of place to be using these kind of dorky shipper names, because its one of those fandoms where things are only as serious as you want them to be. I even like the shipper portmanteaus for pairings I don't ship in this fandom. Sheriarty, Mormor, Mystrade, Johnlockary.

OTOH, no power on this earth would get me to call my last OTP by a portmanteau. It would just be so wrong for them.

Oh man, I totally agree. I was never much of a fan of portmanteaus, but with Sherlock fandom I gave in and embraced it. There are pairings in that fandom I wanted to ship a little just because the portmanteaus sounded fun. I still think Mormor is hilarious(ly cute) for a couple of psychopaths.

Are you me? Cuz I went through the exact same rethinking process with portmanteaus, except it was a different major fandom that changed my mind about them.

I'm not very fond of them, myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But if a good portion of the fandom is using them, it's understandable that they get used as identifier.

I do kind of like pairing names that use some aspect of the two characters, like some of the Avengers ones - Frostiron, Stark Spangled Banner, Starbucks, etc. though I kind of wish Bucky/Thor was Arm&Hammer.

Idk I think Pepperony is the best ship name.

Not so keen on Stucky, sticks in the throat.

I wish we could have stayed with the good old slash, especially indicating the positions, i.e. top/bottom NOT bottom/top. There are pairings I just can't even think about the other way around and portmanteau kinda always leaves that open.

I personally loved using "Gwack" when I was in the Torchwood fandom just because Gwen/Jack shippers hated it. I found the portmanteau very fitting for the ship.

What's with the aggression in this thread? I went in here expecting lots of laughs.

I'm not a huge fan of them and tend to avoid using them myself but I don't care if other people do, plus some of them are actually kind of cute.

Well if you're not able to take them seriously, then you can take them (and all of Fandom) just a tiny bit ironically. embrace it! Fandom can be crazy so it's better to laugh at it when it is.

But isn't that almost all of them at this point? You don't have to use the portmanteau if you don't like it. (I often don't.)

Some of them are kind of fun though.

...but like, you don't have to call them that. You can still ship a pairing without calling them by the fandom name. Am I missing something.........?

99% of pairings have portmanteaus now though.

I like that while fandom insists on "Hicstrid" the VA for Hiccup calls it "Asscup"
