F!S Anon Meme (the ??th!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required.
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff. If you want me to link your thread up here, drop a link in the first comment!

General:

TL;DR rantings ahead.

How do I count the ways?

- They just plain aren't that great. The first two X-Men films had their flaws certainly, but it is ridiculous to dismiss them completely and then put the new films on a pedestal when they have just as many, if not more flaws.

- Because they're considered the "best" X-Men films, people look at you like you're insane if you prefer the original films.

- DoFP literally erased the original X-Men films from continuity, giving the fans who prefer the new films even more reason to scorn anyone who prefers the originals.

- The XMFC fans have flooded AO3 with their fic. This in and of itself would not be a bad thing, except many of these fic writers insist upon tagging their XMFC fic as comicverse fic, making it impossible for comic fans to find fic that is actually set in the comicverse. (The MCU and TASM fandoms have the same problem, so don't think I'm giving them a pass.)

- In fandom's collective consciousness, XMFC's "Cherik" has thoroughly displaced every other incarnation of the relationship between Professor X and Magneto. Good luck finding post-XMFC meta or fic about them in the comics/cartoon/original films that isn't coloured by the version of their dynamic presented in XMFC.

- To expand on my last point, in the comics and cartoons Professor X and Magneto were close friends for years before their falling out. In the original films this was implied to be the case, until XMFC retconned it to them only being friends for a few weeks at most. Which is stupid, for the same reason the "KHAAAAAAAAN" moment in Star Trek: Into Darkness doesn't work. Without the long shared background the characters have in the comics and cartoons, the rift that develops between them doesn't hold as much weight or meaning.

- Every time I try to talk about my annoyance with everything I mentioned above, I'm accused of "hipsterism" or "gatekeeping". I don't want to keep people out of the fandom. What I want is for people to recognize that XMFC is not interchangeable with other X-Men continuities. I don't care if other people like XMFC, because I recognize that not everyone has the same taste as me and that's okay.

What do I want? I want people to keep their movieverse fic out of the comicverse tag. I want people to stop using the XMFC versions of the characters as the lens through which they interpret every other incarnation of the characters, because it simply doesn't work. I want people to stop acting like the new X-Men films are "objectively" better that the old ones, even though both the new and old films are flawed in different ways.

In short, I wish XMFC didn't have such a monopoly on modern X-Men fandom, and it frustrates me deeply because the X-Men franchise is so close to my heart.

"DoFP literally erased the original X-Men films from continuity": well no, it erased the shitty third movie that nearly everyone hated.

Fandom Whining: Shit happens. It sucks, but the fact of the matter is the movies are 1000% times for accessible to people.

Close Friends Thing: People can become very close in a short period of time. And I thought XMFC took place over months not weeks.

It will never not have a monopoly. The movies are easy to see and have good looking actors. Comics will lose every time.

"well no, it erased the shitty third movie that nearly everyone hated."

True. Even I can't find it in myself to defend the piece of trash that was X3. However, I've seen more than a few people talk about the original films as if all three of them were erased by DoFP, not just X3. I don't know if it's because they interpreted DoFP differently than I did, or because they just weren't paying attention... in any case, it's annoying.

"It sucks, but the fact of the matter is the movies are 1000% times for accessible to people."

I know you're right, but it still frustrates me.

"People can become very close in a short period of time."

That would be fine, if it weren't for A) the retconning of their implied backstory in the first two films, and B) the "fandom taking XMFC as gospel over every other version of their relationship" aspect of it. Honestly, I wouldn't hate XMFC and its version of the characters if it wasn't displacing all the other versions that exist.

I appreciate that you took the time to read my whole comment and didn't accuse me of being a hipster who wants to keep people out of the fandom. Thank you for that. (Not being sarcastic, I really do appreciate it.)
