It certainly helps. But don't take my word for it, look at any of the real cake channels on youtube and see the difference between knowing how to work out of a box and knowing how to make a real product.

Making a cake from scratch has literally nothing to do with decorating ability? If the channel were about cooking that would be one thing. But the whole point of the channel is about decorating. So how the cake is made has no affect on that.
