Some ground rules:

The trick is to get a pokemon's HP really low without killing it. Even then, sometimes you have to throw several of pokeballs before one sticks. Just like in the official games, great balls and ultra balls are more effective than normal balls and master balls are 100% guaranteed to work.

But having said that, I wouldn't recommend using a master ball to catch a non-legendary, no matter how tempting it may be. They cost waaaaaaay too much. You can win master balls for free by playing the sidequests, but that can take a while since each sidequest has like 100 battles.

I know I said in my original post that the forums are full of illiterate 12 year olds, but in spite of that they're a good place to go if you're looking for clarification from the mods about something.
