Pretty much this! I guess it's because, at least in Western literature, there's been a running tradition of using dystopian settings to warn about [insert subject here]. It's definitely annoying, though. Some things should just be entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)I can see that. Expectation can really ruin a movie/show/book. There are several things I've watched/read that if I'd known nothing about them, I might've enjoyed them but they weren't what I was expecting so I didn't.
I feel like Crimson Peak (which I have not yet seen) is going to suffer from that. It sounds like it does have legitimate issues but a lot of the reviewers have said they weren't scared, but from what I've heard, it's not meant to be scary. I think the promos haven't helped it, making people think it's going to be a scary ghost story, so they'll be disappointed where they might not be otherwise.
Re: Snowpiercer
And it's weird to think that people were expecting something scary? A lot of del Toro's work excels in creating a dark, mysterious atmosphere with the occasional bloody scene, and I've never found it to be frightening. Then again, I also haven't seen any of the promo for it, so it's not fair of me to talk about being baffled at people's expectations.
