Snowpiercer

I just saw this last night and I liked it. Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Loved it! Though, the first 2-3 times I watched it, it was without the Korean subtitles. I did not realize it was supposed to be subtitled until I saw it on Netflix. Boy, did that clear up some confusion!

I loved the setting of each train car. Though the ending was a bit meh. I know it was supposed to be hopeful but...how hopeful could it be?

Also, sexy hobo Chris Evans!

I was watching the special features on my DVD, and it's interesting how little english there is for the American DVD. It looks like a very international setup.

I really wish we'd gotten to see even more cars. I loved those too. I actually thought there should've been more to sustain the population (I just assume we didn't actually see all the cars with meat/plants and the animals where the meat must've come from). I guess in the comic, the train was 1001 cars long, which makes it seem more like a good chunk of humanity than the few hundred people they crammed on the train we saw.

I sort of agree about the ending. I was thinking, though, that if they follow the polar bear to its hunting grounds (a predator must mean there is prey, which means some kinds of plants for them) they would find a food source. But I'm not sure how equipped the kids would be. Were there any other survivors at all? Would Yona understand how to strip the train for useable parts?

It just seemed silly for the dad to want to free them when the world was melting and if he waited a couple more years, it would've melted more and been more hospitable. He wasn't in the tail-section, so it shouldn't have been so horrible for him. And he should've picked somewhere near the equator to make sure he was in the best place to start over.

I did love Chris in this. Despite what he did, he turned out more likable than I'd heard he was going to. I really liked that he was able to redeem himself and save the kid - that he had a chance to give his arm like Gilliam did.

But, NGL, my favorite character was Grey (the mute guy with the tattoos).

The only thing I can figure is that if a polar bear survived, maybe other humans survived. And hopefully the sound of the train crashing would draw them in. Otherwise, even if they can somehow survive, two people are not going to be repopulating the world.

Re: Snowpiercer

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. Even if some other people did survive, we would definitely be on the brink for extinction. The population bottle neck that almost killed humanity was like 1000 breeding pairs if I recall correctly. Less than that is still unlikely to have much of a future, though we would maybe have some technology that could be harvested from the train.

However, in the comics, there was a second train. They did sort of combine the comics so I'm not sure if there's any hope of a second train in the movie but they could definitely do something with that. I could see them lying about a second train for whatever reason, always on the other side of the world.

I really liked it for the most part but I had a few issues. Spoilers below.

Stop here if you care.

I have to roll my eyes at how horrified they were at finding out they were eating insects when they had already knowingly resorted to cannibalism before.

Re: Snowpiercer

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the same! When they first looked into the vat, I was sure I was going to see the kids they'd taken earlier or dead bodies. When it was just insects, I thought that wasn't too bad. Not my cup of tea but I know several cultures eat bugs, and there's a push to say that bugs are more nutritious and better to get protein from than ranch-farming. Even rats would've been worse for me a squeamish level. (And where do all those bugs come from, one wonders?)

So, you're definitely not alone on that. :)

They probably keep some alive for breeding.

Re: Snowpiercer

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the guy who found out being horrified so much as angry about the bugs, and that was because 1) it was the entire end car that was being fed them 2) on purpose 3) without knowing about it. With the cannibalism it was a last resort that they nevertheless chose to do themselves, and some people took the choice to die instead.

I enjoyed, but mostly in a "so bad it's good" way. I thought it was way too over the top, though I really liked Tilda Swinton's performance.

Interesting. I thought it was stylized but the performances seemed pretty solid to me.

That's how I was too. I liked how so much seemed just a bit off. It really added to the atmosphere for me. I love that kind of thing in general though so I could be reaching to see it where other people are more rightly seeing bad acting. Who knows.

Re: Snowpiercer

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-10-18 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't so much bad acting - I actually thought the all actors did a good job, I just particularly enjoyed Tilda's performance - it was more the content of the movie of itself, if that makes any sense? Like I said in a comment below, Snowpiercer had been hyped up as a a biting social commentary, and it didn't come across that way to me.

I can understand that. Some people have a habit of trying to turn any kind of dystopian thing into some incredibly relevant and chilling commentary on society. Can't they just be entertaining?

Pretty much this! I guess it's because, at least in Western literature, there's been a running tradition of using dystopian settings to warn about [insert subject here]. It's definitely annoying, though. Some things should just be entertaining.

Re: Snowpiercer

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-10-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the movie had been hyped in my corner of the world as a biting social commentary so I went in expecting that! In my experience, I like movies a lot more when I go in not knowing or expecting anything.

Re: Snowpiercer

AYRT
I can see that. Expectation can really ruin a movie/show/book. There are several things I've watched/read that if I'd known nothing about them, I might've enjoyed them but they weren't what I was expecting so I didn't.

I feel like Crimson Peak (which I have not yet seen) is going to suffer from that. It sounds like it does have legitimate issues but a lot of the reviewers have said they weren't scared, but from what I've heard, it's not meant to be scary. I think the promos haven't helped it, making people think it's going to be a scary ghost story, so they'll be disappointed where they might not be otherwise.

Re: Snowpiercer

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-10-18 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I had NO idea what I was getting myself into when I watched Crimson Peak, other than the fact that I love del Toro's stuff. I think that definitely helped, otherwise I'd probably be very disappointed.

And it's weird to think that people were expecting something scary? A lot of del Toro's work excels in creating a dark, mysterious atmosphere with the occasional bloody scene, and I've never found it to be frightening. Then again, I also haven't seen any of the promo for it, so it's not fair of me to talk about being baffled at people's expectations.

Re: Snowpiercer

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You should look up the trailers then. From what I hear, they basically put all the ghosts scenes in there, and gave a very bad impression of what the movie would be. But then it sounds like it would be a hard movie to market. I think that's true of a lot of del Toro's movies.

The movie says what it is in the first 10 minutes! A gothic story, with ghosts, not a ghost story.

I've seen it and I liked it, the ending was a little meh(what with how it felt like it was supposed to be hopeful because the two kids survived? But really they'd die within a week), but otherwise I thought it was a good watch. Plus hobo Chris Evans was oddly attractive.

I liked the design of the interiors of the different train cars we saw as well, they were pretty neat.

Kind of depressing. Hobo captain America goes through hell just to get the last survivors of the human race eaten by a polar bear.
