My hot take here is that it's good to have diversity but it's also okay to like things with less diversity, if you like them. But if you prefer things with more diversity, that's also okay.

Okay, well, that's just my opinion but I thought I'd share. Have a lovely day everyone!

Rowling did include some POCs as minor characters, but I know what you mean, OP. The whole "Dumbledore is gay" thing loooooong after the fact made me roll my eyes.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If Rowling hadn't said that about Dumbledore and gotten the positive feedback that she did on it, there's less of a chance Riordan would have been able to write a character as gay in his books. Just sayin.

I don't see why people give her some much flack for that. Considering Dumbledore is a single man, there are few opportunities for the narrative to "out" him without it being "btw Harry I'm gay", which would be very weird considering he's the headmaster of his school. Especially as Harry realises in Deathly Hallows how little he actually knows Dumbledore as a person.

The original Percy Jackson series was pretty damn white though, especially for being set mostly in New York City.

He fixed it with his following three series, and that's where I give the credit. I still love the original series, especially Titan's Curse.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Changing standards though. Having a thirteen year old crush on a male character is not the thing it was twenty(ish) years ago.

Large part of the difference is the fact that Harry Potter is set in Britain rather than the US though. According to Wikipedia Britain was 92 % white in 2001, so that's the majority by several miles. And with wizards being a minority themselves, it would honestly feel a bit odd if there were a super racially diverse population. As it is I think the racial demography at Hogwarts pretty much fits the real world.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter also took place in the early to mid-1990s (Harry was 12 in 1992 according to the Death Day party) so Britain would have likely been even whiter at that time

the disparity wouldn't feel so great if the POC characters were actually given substantial parts, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. JFC, Rowling did the research and drew up a Hogwarts demographic that reflected the IRL demographics for Britain exactly. Yes, I think the main characters could've been more diverse--in gender and in color--but as far as basic representation. she pretty much got it. Britain is not the US. It's pretty white.

See, it was her actual writing itself I grew out of.

I can understand where you're coming from though.

Aren't you too old to be reading kid books?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They're good reads. I mainlined them when I was super sick a couple of years ago and couldn't manage anything 'age appropriate' because of fatigue related attention span.

The books are engaging. The films were a major letdown despite some of the names in the cast.

If someone enjoys it, why the hell not. I've already preordered the new Wimpy Kid book, as I do every year.

No one's ever too old to read kid or YA books.

You do realize that the original Percy Jackson series was white as fuck and it's only in his follow ups, once he's achieved popularity on a YA level, and that started years after HP ended, that he started incorporating diverse casts. Yeah Heroes of Olympus is diverse, but Percy Jackson and the Olympians is totally pasty and it takes place in New York City. Adding to that, since he was already an established author he probably COULD have gotten away with a really diverse cast from the getgo since he already had his foot in the door. You're comparing an established writer who started a series in like 2011 (Heroes of Olympus) to someone who couldn't even get published who started a series in 1997.

Similarly JK Rowling's post Harry Potter books have been MUCH more diverse than the HP books. So basically, they've both gotten better about diversity over time.

In any case I was into PJatO as it came out, and grew disillusioned with it because I found the last book very lacking. Couldn't get into his newer stuff because it was more of the same. I find his writing pretty lackluster anymore, which is too bad because I do appreciate that he's diversified his cast.

I'm really happy that Riordan is writing things with diversity. I just have no interest in his books. I read the first one, and nothing about that world intrigued me. I do like mythology a lot, but that wasn't enough to peak my interest. I also didn't like his writing that much.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
At least you compare the SERIES Harry Potter with Rick Riordan's and not the author J.K Rowling. The last HP book was published in 2007!

If J.K Rowling had written those books nowadays, yes, they would have been more diverse.
The books she wrote since then included gay characters, more racially diverse characters, sympathetic mentally ill characters. Her newest book featured a trans women and possibly a genderfluid character.

Does she writes them like a stuffy aunt who somehow caught wind of topical sj issues? Yes, but she does make an effort.

See my issue is that the Percy Jackson books (haven't read his other series) are just... lazy. He cribs entire plotlines from Greek mythology, with very minor twists. It's just every quest ever mentioned somewhere ever slapped together, with some original characters and an overarching baddie slapped on. It's so freaking LAZY.
Harry Potter is superior immo, and I don't think diversity is what makes a book automatically interesting. Maybe HP would have been perfect with more diversity, but I have a pretty low opinion of Percy Jackson. I wouldn't even call it YA, it's very kiddy. And the writing is so juvenile.

I'm glad JK didn't feel the need to do token diversity and have the wizarding equivalent of John Boyega in the series.

I have this problem too sometimes when watching TV, especially after having watched Power Rangers.
