They're ALL creepy, appropriative assholes who smell as opposed to just some of them being that way.

>>> Disclaimer, had a fic kin threaten to assault me for pointing out he was flat out wrong about the character he said he was.

A fanfic writer who was discussing whether or not Hydra are actual Nazis got a note from someone claiming to be a Holocaust survivor. And yeah, okay, while most survivors are getting pretty old, there's no law that says someone that old can't be on the internet, but then they also claimed to be a teenager and then when people went to their blog, they learned that the person claimed to be Erik Lenshrr. It...wasn't a roleplay blog. They seriously are trying to tell people they're Magneto, and inserting themselves into serious conversations about serious topics and offering a fictional elderly Holocaust survivor's opinions as their own. they were so far gone they not only couldn't tell the difference between reality and fiction, but they were doing so deeply offensively.

I think that's the difference between fickin and otherkin. If angels or aliens are ever proven to exist, maybe you are one. Whatever, can't be proven either way. But you cannot be someone who was made up in the Marvel comics offices. You just literally can't, logistically (or legally!) be someone who has been proven to be a one hundred percent trademarked fictional creation. People like that desperately need mental help.

*insert Morgan Freeman's 'thank you for that' clip here*

I think they would counter as the Na'vikin did by saying Magneto (or whoever) is or was a real person in an alternate reality and all writers who make fiction are actually just channeling their own memories or alternate universes when they write. Or something.

Okay, this is just creepy. I'm usually cool with a lot of shit, but actually having had a relative in the camps, that sort of disturbs me.

I don't want to use the word "appropriation" because that's such a tumblr word, but it feels so disrespectful to people who actually survived these horrors.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Wow.

Even I admit that is appropriation. And I'm pretty "appropriative" myself. I pretty much flat-out lie about my ethnic background online.

But nope, that's appropriation. Also psychosis.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Why lie about your ethnic background? What's the point of that?

I'm honestly curious.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
DA but maybe to not be told to check their privilege for every little thing they say?
Maybe to not be discriminated or stereotyped against?

Lots of reasons seeing as much of an asshole people on the internet can be towards anyone for any reason.

With the way a lot of places on the internet (especially Tumblr) have a huge hateboner for white people, I don't blame white people who want to avoid admitting online that they're white so they don't get abuse leveled at them over it.

> a lot of places on the internet (especially Tumblr) have a huge hateboner for white people

LOL.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... this is the very definition of appropriation.

Also "gross", "nasty", "deluded" and "what the fuck do you think you're doing" all apply.

That piques my interest, but it doesn't actually answer my question.

Is this, like, people who think they ARE characters from fiction? (as opposed to just soulbonding them, I guess?)

Otherkin say they are animals or something else other than human. Fickin say they are fictional characters or that they are in an alternate reality or another life or something. So someone who thinks they are are dragon is an otherkin, someone who thinks they are Smaug is a fickin.

Thanks! That makes sense based on what I'm picking up from the thread.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still confused. I've seen people say they relate to characters but then I see people will see a picture of a fictional character and say, "Don't I look good here?"

Are there are people who legit think they are a character or is it just a role-play thing? I could have sworn one of these people said only people who have psychosis are allowed to have fickin. I'm so confused...

I guess it's the latter?

I could have sworn one of these people said only people who have psychosis are allowed to have fickin.

Honestly, I think one of the hallmarks of bizarre trends like this is the infighting, including arguing over how mental illness relates to their identity.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be friends with someone who said they were the reincarnation of a magical character from another world they wrote into their (unpublished) novels. They also had an imaginary family (partner/kids) they thought they spent time with part time. The cognitive dissonance was unbelievable.

So fickin and the ability to hold amazingly contradictory behaviours/beliefs don't surprise me at all.
