Two authors in particular- JK Rowling and Hiromu Arakawa. Mostly because I like their worldbuilding and the general story structure. I always felt like Fullmetal Alchemist gave off a sense that the world was much bigger than the main cast or even the main characters.

Harry Potter has a lot of fun magicky stuff and possibilities. And I feel like they would balance out each other's flaws.

Really? I hated the FMA world. It's not that it wasn't an interesting world but I just didn't like the way it worked at all. I never felt comfortable with it and I always felt like it was just a story, no matter how much of it I read.

I liked the story, though.

Eh I guess what I liked about it was that to me, it gave off a feeling like while Ed and Al were cool, there felt like there was a lot going on , more than them.

The world was bigger than the main characters and they had a solidified PLACE in the story without the story coming across as revolving around them. If that makes sense. It followed other plot lines and just felt like everyone fit like cogs in a machine.

That's true. I guess my dislike is more based on the fact that I just find the world unpleasant. The Harry Potter world, for example, gives off warmth and welcome to me. The FMA world is one I dislike and I would never want to be in.

That's fair enough. Some stories/worlds can rub a person the wrong way.

I think that the FMA world is a bit more distinct than many other anime worlds, though. A lot of them are just cribbed off of Japan, or fake-European without much thought given to the world itself. FMA had a more solid mythology to it, I felt, though I don't think Arakawa pushed it as far as it could have gone.
