Who do you want to write like?

Inspired by secret #6. Which author/s would you like to channel in your writing? Do you actively try to achieve elements of their style?

Charles Dickens so that future students will be forced to read my books while cursing my writing.

I actually wish I could write more like Tolkien. Mostly because description is probably the thing I'm least able to write well and he was really good at that. And also I can't seem to write long things.

For me, I'd probably like to write like a combination of Stephen King, Kafka, and Tolstoy.
Kafka for the weirdness, Tolstoy for the in-depth world and flights of philosophy, and Stephen King for readability and popularity.
...I don't know if any of this is actually achievable, though 8D Just trying to write like Kafka or Tolstoy is probably insane, let alone a weird combo of them both.

I've tried writing inspired by P.G. Wodehouse, and it was pretty freaking difficult, though a very satisfying challenge. I haven't yet posted the fic (I'm stalling on finishing two scenes... ugh), but I'm curious how it'll be received.

To channel a bit of Fitzgerald would be nice.

Anyone who has created a world that people love delving into. I get so jealous of authors who get fans having really indepth discussions of their worlds.

I don't know about the style of the writing itself though. I like doing stuff inspired by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler so sometimes I'll channel them a bit. Overall I don't really have anyone that I aspire to be like. I still hold onto a compliment I got from an English professor years ago who told me that I have a distinct style that is entirely my own.

Maybe Scott Lynch? I love how seamlessly he weaves in his worldbuilding, and how as a reader you understand all these things about his world without being spoonfed. Or maybe a bit like Donna Tartt. And a little bit of Murakami's surrealism.

Two authors in particular- JK Rowling and Hiromu Arakawa. Mostly because I like their worldbuilding and the general story structure. I always felt like Fullmetal Alchemist gave off a sense that the world was much bigger than the main cast or even the main characters.

Harry Potter has a lot of fun magicky stuff and possibilities. And I feel like they would balance out each other's flaws.

Margaret Atwood. I just find her style very unique, descriptive, and pleasurable to read. I feel like I do subconsciously try to write like her, but I don't think I'll ever be as good.

I could say there are a lot of authors who have influenced me but none are there that I strive to be. Rather, I hope in my writing that when a work is finished that it is something I find satisfying. Considering that I always rind myself wanting somewhere I then have to improve.

Peter S. Beagle. I love his mix of pathos and subtle world creation. (I got to meet him once and tell him that I would die happy if I could write a tenth as well as he could and he laughed and told me there were 20 other authors he felt the same way about.)

I love JKR's character creation and heartfelt character development, and I actively seek to mirror that in my own writing.

I also envy any author who writes the different ways people talk without resorting to phonetic dialect, which I despise.

I can't think of s particular writer whom I want to emulate, but I do know how I want to write. I want to be able to convey a sense of scene and place with as little exposition as possible. I want the worldbuilding to feel organic, natural. I want to provide closure while leaving possibilities open, so the reader has room to think about and imagine what happens after. And I want to be able to punch the reader in the gut with a single sentence.

Whoever wrote Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I love alliterative verse and kenning. I love playing with words in this manner and wish I was better at it.

Tolkien. I love his command of language. He's very particular about what word he uses when and knows the meaning behind it and that's important in why he chooses it. I also enjoy a more archaic style of writing, both reading and writing it. I love the history he so casually drops into his world, and the sheer creativity he had.

Yes. I do find myself reaching for - and trying very hard *not* to copy - Tanish Lee and C J Cherryh. I love Cherryh's way with action sequences, and I love Lee's lush, sensuous and detailed descriptions.

And, upon reading other comments - I do like how Gibson sets up the future, giving us new things/techs/history without being boring or describing a new kind of phone for ten pages. I love how poetic his descriptions of rusted out car parts can be.

And also - E.M. Forster. He is delightful.

Obvious answer, but Terry Pratchett. He had such a good balance between hilarious and clever and smart and meaningful, and his prose really is captivating.

Rowling or Pratchett for the paycheck...

Robert Sheckley for the lazy as he has some awesome short stories. With more slash.

or Astolat, icarus_chained and jade-dragoness, all of them. I want a variety in my fics.

Flannery O'Connor! I love her southern Gothic wit and I would love to be able to write like her. The first time I read one of her short stories, I just fell in love with her style and she makes me laugh, too.

And Dorothy Parker is another favorite. She always makes me laugh.

I wish to have the skill of prose as Janet Frame does, but I also want to write like Oscar Wilde and Terry Pratchett's magnificent child. So extremely beautiful prose with never ending sarcasm and wit.
