LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What kinds of characters do you hate seeing? Include examples and exceptions if you feel like it.

The Magic Sociopath

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The omniscient sociopath or serial killer who's always able to manipulate people and predict absolutely everything that will happen, including coincidences, ostensibly because he's just that brilliant but really because the writer is on his side.

Examples: Hannibal, Nolan Joker a bit. Light Yagami definitely as the ridiculous powers of prediction part, but at least he gets bitten in the ass by it all in the end.

Yes, so much! I hate those types. It's why I've never finished Silence of the Lambs.

same.

I guess because I love both SotL Hannibal and the TV-show Hannibal so much, they don't annoy me. But all the Hannibal-esque versions of the magical sociopath that came after SotL? You betcha.

To be fair, Light never made any actual mistakes, it was Mikami's fault. The author apparently even was adamant that Light couldn't fail on his own, he still had to do everything perfectly and it was someone else who messed it up for him.

Characters who are unrequited in love with someone else but don't do anything about it until someone else makes a move first. (Gale in Hunger Games is the only one coming to mind now, but I know there are others.)

Oh, yes, Gale. I really don't like him. He doesn't do anything and then he gets mad and possessive when Katniss does what she needs to survive and pretends to be with Peeta and may possibly be attracted to Peeta. Also, Peeta is awesome.

designated female love interest and that's their only purpose

dead dog

god, yes, that first one.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
an atypical character who is there solely to be atypical and Not Like Other Shows

i'm all for unstereotypical minority characters but when the black guy is a programmer and being gasp, both black and a programmer are his only personality traits, or when a woman's main personality trait is that she doesn't want children or marriage and that's all she talks about, the writing is about as lazy as the stereotypical kind

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Give an example of a woman who only talks about how she doesn't want kids or marriage, who doesn't end up falling in love and implicitly (or explicitly!) changing her mind.

Whatever character type Deaton is because he's useless.

this cracked me up. I actually kinda like deaton (probably because I shipped him with peter way back in season 1), but that's still very accurate

I think that's 'Useless Mentor', maybe.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
characters that just won't die

like there are several instances where they should have died but writers keep them living through unlikely circumstances because they're a fave.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, Sylar. He wasn't a bad first season villain but he really needed to die then.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
The villain whose motive is "humans are boring, feeble-minded creatures and that is why they do bad things, but I alone am special and smarter than them all and it is up to me to save them from themselves." The most recent example in something I've seen is the main antagonist in Psycho Pass.

Antiheroes. There are some examples I like, but for the most part I'm not a fan of the trope.

The one normal dude in a group of extraordinary friends (who, incidentally, ends up "getting" the really hot, amazing, special female character).

Just curious what did the examples you like do right?

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Very, very smart white man. VERY smart. He's smarter than everyone on the planet. He's also a big jerk to everyone and everyone hates him. BUT, he's amazing at this one thing, this one thing that's rly important, so everyone respects him and is in awe of him.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER TYPES

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
i don't mind this character in theory but i usually hate the character in practice because everyone hating him is handwaved as the silly idiot peasants that don't recognize greatness and it's obvious author wish fulfillment

if his lack of social skills is portrayed like a legitimate flaw and people thinking he's a dickweed has consequences and they are shown to be right about that regardless of whether or not he's smart, i can handle it, but when does that ever happen

I am intensely, painfully tired of tsundere characters. They're a bunch of emotionally stunted, hyper-agressive brats, who take their issues out on everyone around them. I was tired of them ten years ago, and now I just refuse to read things where one of the main characters is one.
Tendo Akane, Narusegawa Naru, Chidori Kaname... ugh.

Asshole woobies, where their tragic backstory is supposed to excuse their actions.

I'm tired of Fluttershy-type characters- the super shy ones who approach everything timidly but never seem to grow out of being a huge wuss about everything that's outside their comfort zone. They're just not interesting to me.
