[Outlander series, Dougal/Claire]

I don't know why, but "taken" as a euphemism for "had sex with" irks the heck out of me. It's up there with some of the stupid terms for genitals ("manhood," etc.). People make up some annoying words in regards to sex.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
okay but nothing beats "quivering hole" for anus.

'Taken' has a certain dramatic dominating connotation. It's a useful word.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, 'dominating' is the right word for it. I wouldn't use 'taken' as a euphemism for sex in general, but more to indicate that it's of a more forceful, dominant nature.

To me it implies more than just sex - it implies sex by force, whether consensual or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Rape. There are no skeevy rape scenes between them. Own your kinks.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, own your kink, but don't call it what you want to call it, call it what someone else tells you to call it!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not really owning it if you're hiding it behind more palatable language.

Though I'm kind of lol'ing at you picking this battle here, right now, on F!S... Non-con is used for fanfic for a reason. That being, it can be used to refer to any non-consensual sexual actions even if they are not sex. Also, non-con distinguishes itself from dub-con, which are technically both rape in real world talk. As is, it's the fandom lingo, whether you like it or not.

I used to write for Literotica, a site that explicitly bans "rape." All this actually means is that you can't tag things with "rape," and it has an entire section for "noncon." Forgive me for thinking the distinction's a little arbitrary.

Right? I'm confused about why it's a big deal. IRL you generally wouldn't call a romantic couple (or a couple you hope will be in a romantic relationship) a "ship" or a "pairing", because that's fandom slang. Just like "non con" is fandom slang. It's not soft pedaling anything, it's just different terminology for a specific sub culture.

Did people really shave their heads back then?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Asking the serious question. But I am curious. Someone do the research.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, to avoid lice.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Shaving one's head (or one's entire body) is not a new trend. The Ancient Egyptians did it as a hygiene/comfort/fashion thing. Kids would have a mostly-shaved head with a single lock of hair, and one of the rites for your passage into adulthood would be shaving that lock off. It made more sense back then, because having a shaved head was easier to keep clean and cool, and people wore wigs.

the comments on this perfectly normal secret are so weird

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, aren't they?

I miss the days of 'My kink is mine, and your kink is not my kink'.
Tumbler's Kink Shaming Police is to blame.

Tumblr sucks the fun out of everything.

It didn't used to. I wonder what happened.

OKAY, SO ON TOPIC...

I agree so hard with you, OP. He is so hot, their scenes together were so hot, I too would love any kind of non-con/dub-con/fully-con love scenes between them. Or just kiss again, I don't care, I'll take anything.

Honestly, I am shocked (SHOCKED I SAY) that no one out there has written a complete AU of the series wherein Claire had married Dougal instead. I don't care if he's gross in the books -- y'all can Google "Graham McTavish shirtless" and you will understand.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know what Dougal is like, because I didn't read the book or watch the show. Graham MacTavish is gross.

Agreed. I didn't really ship them in the books, but Graham McTavish convinced me this is a thing that needed to happen!

If you want to glory in women being "non-conned," go watch GoT.
