I'm still amazed that some guy on the radio saying Teletubbies was trying to turn kids gay because Tinky-Winky is purple and has an upside-down triangle antenna became a national talking point that people had serious debates about in the 90s.

There was also someone who wrote an essay that delved into the numerous reasons why Blaise Zabini was definitely not black, after Order of the Phoenix came out and said right in the book that he was black. I don't remember what any of the reasons were, but the author even went into other canons like Shakespeare and Tolkien for his proof.

I want to say that was Jerry Falwell making that into a thing? Which, if that's true, should tell you everything right there, 'cause Falwell's a moron.

But yeah, the fact that people actually took those comments seriously, instead of just laughing and going, "Is this idiot for real?" about it and moving on, is...sad. Very sad.

You know, as an adult, I'm more willing to humor the possibility that Tinky-Winky was designed to be gay. The purple, and the pink purse being the toy of choice, loved the tutu... Plus, Dipsy is black, Po is Asian, so they were really trying to hit minorities. It's obviously not "canon" - he's a baby, and at least, he's there to encourage kids to play with whatever toys they like. but still, I could see him being deliberately designed as gay. And that's awesome.

That was Jerry Falwell. He's been dead for years, so at least take comfort that there is one less complete idiot in the world making trouble.

unfortunately, there are lots of idiots just like him who are still very much alive.

I remember the guy who worked himself into a frothing rage over Black!Blaise! He brought the lulz regularly, because a lot of things made him foam at the mouth. And he would write these endless treatises about it, as it might be from some lofty moral/intellectual eminence, like the people he was disagreeing with were not just wrong, they were barbarians at the gates, about to destroy western civilization.

Also, I remember that he had written a book about King Arthur which he could not get published. Considering his writing style, I'm not surprised.

I even remember his name, but I'm not writing it here; I'm still afraid that if I do, it'll summon him, like Bloody Mary.
