Character interpretation is often debatable, and no one behaves in exactly the same way in every situation and at every time, so I try to be open to different ideas, but what keeps me from reading fic most of the time is the tendency to change physical appearance to correspond to whatever your preference is, even when you get to see the character's whole body with little obstruction many times in canon. I'm a very visual person and it's just wildly disorienting to me to read things like that. Even the wrong eye color will stop me cold. Plus I don't kink on the strict top/bottom, big dominant guy/little submissive guy stuff that goes along with these amazing bodily transformations at all, so it's a big turnoff. Will Graham is not a tiny, delicate, waifish little twink, no matter how many times you say he is. He's a well-muscled fortyish dude, short and cute but really quite sturdy. It's all right there on the screen. But the weirdest Hannibal-related descriptor I've ever read was still from the person who insisted in every fic that Hannibal's lips were "thin and colorless." I will never understand that shit, his lips are ridiculous. Look at his profile, it's nuts. I refuse to believe that person watched the show with their eyes. lolol

My favorite example of this is fanart that gives Captain America and the Winter Soldier skinny bishie arms. One of which is robotic.

LOL wow. Even robotic limbs aren't safe, and I'm sure there's really nothing more helpful to the superhero career than skinny bishie arms.

I've seen Hannibal's lips described as thin too, which just astounds me; it isn't true at all. Will being described as some tiny, weak, delicate flower is hilarious too considering what good shape Hugh Dancy was in for Hannibal. Anytime he's in a tee shirt or less you can see Will is solid and has a nice amount of muscle.

It isn't even like Mads is a bodybuilder either... They're both solid and fit but neither is huge; they have a decent amount of muscle but it looks very natural and they carry it well.

I love this fandom, but sometimes the writing (And general attitude about certain things) confuses me.

Haha, there must be lots of freaky TVs or vision problems out there. Hannibal's always hugely tall and looming in these fics, too, and of course super manly and dominant and all that jazz. It just makes me laugh because canon demonstrates and points out repeatedly that his whole trip is persuasion and seduction, and because Will is so much more typically masculine than Hannibal in his pastimes and general lack of care about things like clothes and grooming and all the other fancy shit Hannibal loves. I love the fandom for its zeal and humor and deep appreciation of canon and everyone involved with it, but I had to give up on the fic. Between the physical transformations and the rampant terrible characterization, I couldn't deal.

Yea, IA about that. I wish that was brought up more often, actually. As for Hannibal being 'super manly and dominant' it's clear that Hannibal enjoys fucking with people (which I guess leads fans to think he needs to be in control all the time), but he also gets a hell of a lot of joy out of other people surprising him; he likes not being the only smart person in the room, and it's Will's intelligence and darker nature that fascinates him so. I don't think he would be against Will having an equal, or near equal amount of control in their relationship post S3.

I think it all boils down to 'people find Hugh Dancy prettier, and Will more sad and easily harmed, so they make him out to be something he isn't'. I also feel like people either make Will way better or worse of a person than he is, so I feel you on the OOC thing. I haven't given up on fic yet because I need it, and I have found a few I like, but a lot of it is completely OOC and makes me frustrated.

Hannibal DOES have his apex predator moments but he isn't the most 'traditionally' masculine guy in the show...or as said, even in that relationship.

Yeah, the hypercompetence and murder wizardness is a lot of fun, but he does overreach and screw up a lot, and sometimes gets his ass kicked hilariously in physical fights, which gets forgotten right along with his very mundane problems of loneliness and lack of real companionship. There's so much to miss when you shove characters into predetermined boxes instead of extrapolating from what's actually there. There's no faster way to make porn incredibly boring, either. It boggles my mind that delicate twink Will and big toppy manly man Hannibal just ramming it in whenever is a hotter scenario to people than hey, what would this be like with their real personalities, with hypercompetent weirdo Hannibal never having been able to be his true self with anyone else and preternaturally tough/heartbreakingly fragile Will having a strange and pretty much magical ability to relate to others in quite intimate ways. But that's just me, hahaha. I may or may not write an AU someday which may or may not be an excuse to stage things like a hot bj scene on the office chaise that doesn't contain any elements I hate, but who's counting, really. What I'd want to do is get between fully murderous and fully innocent somewhere and explore that kind of territory in a fun meta way, but who knows if I'll get to it. I'm a terrible procrastinator with a ton of ideas.
