[The secret shows a retro image of Micky and Minnie Mouse holding hands, against a yellow background.]

There is a person on Tumblr who runs an AU ask blog for characters from an old Disney film. She has a number of OCs there, too. She has already shown the development ofmany hetero relationships, given one of the canon characters an OC love interest, and even made the pregnancy of one of her OCs into a sort of narrative. (None of the canon
characters were canonically in relationship with anyone.) But whenever someone asks about her characters’ (or the canon characters’) sexual orientation, she always gives very evasive replies (like, “Oh, gay means HAPPY, right?!”), or eventually replied with a
very firm, “Such things are pesonal, we keep it to the bedroom!” (not a direct quote, but pretty close).
Excuse me? Are you saying that when someone is not straight, it’s already NSFW to MENTION it, even if it’s a harmless question about whom you are dating and/or in love with? But it’s perfectly fine to show straigth couples and relationships, and even pregnancy, right? We don’t
keep THAT to the bedroom, huh? Shit like this is why people IRL are blamed of “propagating gayness” when merely replying to their co-worker’s questions like, “Do you have a boyfriend?” This person claims to be bisexual, by the way. It’s her blog, and she can do as she wishes, obviously, but if that’s not a pretty off mixture of hypocrisy and bigotry, then I simply don’t know.

Eh...I feel like you're taking this a little personally. It's one person's AU ask blog, just don't pay any more attention to it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she's trying to stay "in-character", since that's likely how Disney would respond to those sorts of questions?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, your assessment sounds on the nose, OP.

(I remember the old days when you got flamed if you didn't 'warn' for same sex romance or crushes in fics. I thought we'd got past that sort of crap.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it is Disney. I know they have "gay days" and so far have shown a noble willingness to accept gay peoples' money, but I don't see them doing much in their movies terms of being LBGT friendly.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad, but true. Sexually ambiguous characters like Elsa and Merida are probably the closest we're ever going to get to a lesbian Disney princess.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
but it's a fan blog that's AU based and already doing a bunch on non-canon things, so does disney's intention really matter?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
It might to the blogger. People can be weird and not altogether logical sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
as a gay person who works for Disney I think their biggest obstacle wrt actual gay representation in movies is that it would severely hamper their ability to market their movies overseas. there are many countries that wouldn't even show a Disney movie with gay characters, and they have contracts and licensing deals with the Disney companies of those countries. if you've got say a gay princess movie to market and the censoring boards on half the countries you market to is telling you no, then you're having to in turn tell Disney (Homophobic Country) that they won't be getting your newest multi-million dollar movie and all the merchandise that goes with it, it becomes a significant issue. there are all sorts of contracts and merch deals that get fucked over because a lot of countries wouldn't want anything pro-gay. unfortunately Disney is just such a massively international company that it's incredibly difficult to deal with any "political" or social issue. I'm not saying Disney would do it if not for that, and it certainly doesn't have a reputation for being cutting edge, but even if there was a green light in the studios to make such a movie, it would be impossible to do anything with.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you're right. I don't think Disney is deliberately not making gay characters because they're homophobes, but I do think that making money and being able to market their product as widely as possible and as much as possible matters more to them than LBGQT representation.

People have a lot of nostalgia and and strong feelings about Disney. Sometimes they forget it's a multi-billion dollar company, and the interests of a multi-billion dollar company aren't always going to mesh with the fans.

This is why cutesy, innocent depictions of same sex relationships are really important to me. I hate when they're considered inherently adult and hypersexual in a way that straight relationships aren't.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she's probably not comfortable with having her characters be gay. I don't know that there's any point in hounding her about it, it's her ask blog.
This may not be PC, but I don't think there's any point in trying to force people to represent stuff.

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2015-10-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably.

Honestly, if they don't want to talk about it they don't have to. IMO forcing someone to represent and talk about things like that is counterproductive because they probably won't give the kind of representation OP would want if they're not comfortable with talking about it.

I was brought up in a religious conservative household and there was a point where I probably wouldn't have wanted me attempting LGBT representation either. Sometimes it can be hard and take a while to unlearn ideas you grew up with.

Better to say noting on the subject rather than say something and it's something harmful or wrong.

Who's trying to force her to do anything?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible that they're just trying to stay in-character, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right. It sounds strange because fandom is so heavily associated with slash, but I've encountered a lot of people in fandom who give me the distinct impression that they have some kind of problem with gay people.

When I see stuff like this I usually figure that, either what you're saying is whats going on, or the person just needs to project themselves on the female characters making most pairings have girls in them, the het stuff being a result of them preferring men than women.

I dunno, not much you can do about it, even if they think gayness is ~~personal but heterosexual attraction is a-ok. You'll just have to give your attention to someone who isn't a hypocrite.

Edited 2015-10-31 00:29 (UTC)

OP here

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't mind that all of her pairings are straight. I would never demand from an artist or somebody inovolved into an RP that they do something they don't like! Every artist should be able to express whatever they want without being bullied into drawing something they are not comfortable with or simply do not want.

What I *do* have a problem with, though, is that she refuses to reply to questions like these altogether, implying that there is basically no such thing as being gay, or it's "improper" per se. It's just quite a hurtful thing to see, because it's the same in the society I live in: when you're asked something to which you would have to reply something that would imply that you're not straight, you have to be evasive - OR YOU'RE BEING IMPROPER. I guess it was a sore spot of mine.

But you're right - I should not waste my time with hypocrits.

yeah, just remember she's the one with the issues. it doesn't reflect on you.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think you need to calm down a little and quit looking so deeply into things.

If we're talking an old old Disney film, they're likely trying to keep in-character to the way people thought back in those days. That's it.

Fuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
You mean back in the day when homosexuality was a sin, but a young girl living with seven old dudes in the woods was okay? ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It always bothered me as well that homosexuality in and of itself is considered "inappropriate" by default. I mean, in G-rated Disney movies they always show the prince and the princess kissing, so how is mentioning that a character is in a same-sex relationship and not even showing them interact romantically at all considered more "inappropriate" and "adult" than that?
