The point of music is to move you, OP, so I see no wrong here.

Keep on bopping!

Thank you, it's nice to know that someone understands.

Yup, different strokes for different folks. And sometimes for the same folks. Tastes change. It's all good.

There's something really wonderful about music with non-human singers, isn't there? Just knowing that something like Vocaloid exists fills me with a sort of indescribable glee that I used to only get when reading sci-fi novels.

The future has arrived, and its pop stars are computer programs!

(And not just pop stars. Opera divas too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oPfF994NN8)

Yeah, there's really the appeal that Vocaloids are non-human singers.

I mean sure, there are real humans behind the music. But the fact that it's sung by a fictional character gives the music a lot of freedom. It's like the music has more place to exist for its own sake. At least that's how I feel about it.

"It's like the music has more place to exist for its own sake."

Oh yes, definitely! There being no "canon" for the Vocaloids themselves is a huge part of the appeal for me. The concept of a singer who is a blank slate, lacking any set personality, and thus can have any emotion or viewpoint projected on to them by the listener is something I find really fascinating.

I kind of want to write a paper examining how the lack of canon influences the fandom and its output, and how it's an important aspect of the Vocaloid being a sort of interactive fandom where the fans are the creators and no one interpretation of the "characters" is more true or valid than any other.

IT'S ALL JUST SO COOL! :D

Yes, it's mega cool! :D

It's really appealing how there are no right or wrong interpreatations for the Vocaloid characters. You're completely free to interpret them any way you like.

And I also like the fact that no gossip magazine is able to ruin any of the characters/music for me. With real life musicians there's always an actual person connected to the music, but the Vocaloids stand for nothing but themself. Yeah sure, I know that there can also be some fandom drama involved with the producers of the vocaloid songs. But that drama is a thing of its own and doesn't affect the Vocaloid characters involved.

I also realized that's the reason I prefer anime and books over real life tv/movies. With those a character is never really free, they're always tied to a real person. But in anime and books characters are always nothing but themself.

I'm glad you're enjoying them. There are some great vocaloid songs, but personally I just can't stand listening to their voices.

Admittedly not everyone will like artifical voices. I guess it can become too uncanny valley for some listeners?

But meanwhile there are so many different Vocaloids, it's easy to find voices that appeal more or less to you.

And the further the software gets developed, the more life-like the voices sound. I can barely make out a difference to real voices when listening to the newest versions. The difference to the earliest stage of the software is unbelievable.

Oh, it's definitely amazing technologically! I can still really hear the difference, though, and it grates on my ears, so often I'll look for utaite versions of the song, if I really like it.
I actually have a friend who's an utaite of some fame, so sometimes I can even get him to sing for me if it's something I really want.

It's very cool how accessible it makes music-making to people who can't themselves sing, though!

Yeah, I guess even with the newest versions the sound of the voices will still sound unpleasant for some people. There's unfourtunately not much one can do about it.

Haha, lucky you, your own personal singer.

It's really a great option for people who want to make music but aren't good at singing. I mean, it's still a huge skill to be able to write your own songs. How sad is it then if your voice isn't suited for it? Vocaloids can be a great option for such cases.

If you like some of the songs, I suggest finding a nico nico singer/chorus cover of that song and just listening to that. Vocaloids are neat, but I really only like their voices when they do creepy songs. Otherwise, humans please!
