There's something really wonderful about music with non-human singers, isn't there? Just knowing that something like Vocaloid exists fills me with a sort of indescribable glee that I used to only get when reading sci-fi novels.

The future has arrived, and its pop stars are computer programs!

(And not just pop stars. Opera divas too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oPfF994NN8)

Yeah, there's really the appeal that Vocaloids are non-human singers.

I mean sure, there are real humans behind the music. But the fact that it's sung by a fictional character gives the music a lot of freedom. It's like the music has more place to exist for its own sake. At least that's how I feel about it.

"It's like the music has more place to exist for its own sake."

Oh yes, definitely! There being no "canon" for the Vocaloids themselves is a huge part of the appeal for me. The concept of a singer who is a blank slate, lacking any set personality, and thus can have any emotion or viewpoint projected on to them by the listener is something I find really fascinating.

I kind of want to write a paper examining how the lack of canon influences the fandom and its output, and how it's an important aspect of the Vocaloid being a sort of interactive fandom where the fans are the creators and no one interpretation of the "characters" is more true or valid than any other.

IT'S ALL JUST SO COOL! :D

Yes, it's mega cool! :D

It's really appealing how there are no right or wrong interpreatations for the Vocaloid characters. You're completely free to interpret them any way you like.

And I also like the fact that no gossip magazine is able to ruin any of the characters/music for me. With real life musicians there's always an actual person connected to the music, but the Vocaloids stand for nothing but themself. Yeah sure, I know that there can also be some fandom drama involved with the producers of the vocaloid songs. But that drama is a thing of its own and doesn't affect the Vocaloid characters involved.

I also realized that's the reason I prefer anime and books over real life tv/movies. With those a character is never really free, they're always tied to a real person. But in anime and books characters are always nothing but themself.
