Anything you are working on? Any advice you need? Anything else about writing?

I'm working on my first longer fic. It is really a series of one-shots, but it is my first multi-chaptered idea, so I'm really excited about it. And I'm exploring some things I haven't written before.

Oooh, sounds exciting! Has the planning process been much different from how you plan one-shots?

I personally don't plan one-shots almost at all, but I also recently started working on a really long fic, and it was the first where I typed out the whole plot before starting to write, the ending and all. It was quite a nice change of pace.

Well it started out as one fic idea and then adding on one before it that needed to happen first. But then I realized that I actually had a bunch of ideas that fit in with the general theme (fulfilling Character A's fantasies) and that it might be cool to do them all together in one fic.

I'm not much of a planner. I usually have a generally idea of what I want. I write pretty much exclusively PWPs, so I tend to write the sex bits first and then write the little bit of plot around those parts.

I have 16 chapter ideas so far for this. We'll see if they all get written or not.

Sounds cool. Collections like these are always fun, imo.

Planning is not my strong suit either. General ideas is what I go for. The only reason I did a proper plan on my long fic was that it is going to be really long (looking like at least 40k) and it's in a historical setting, so I just had to plot it down so I'd know what things I needed to research.

Have loads of fun writing, and don't worry about getting all your ideas written down (16 is a lot)! You can always save some of those for later.

Oh, the plan is to write one at a time. The whole idea is taking one particular pairing and going through various fantasies of one character who I think would have lots of really kinky ideas. So this thing can be written one chapter at a time, and I can always come back and add more chapters to it later.

I have had to do some research just because there are some kinks here that I haven't written and don't know much about. Which is actually the fun of it. I write a lot of D/s fics (I actually have trouble not adding in power dynamics to my PWPs), but I've mostly just written basics and a few small kinks like bondage so far. I want to branch out into other things.

I'm finishing up my Nano plans. Trying to make a story that's self-indulgent enough that I can get myself to type it for 30 days. In my case it means flower-picking, seeing that I delight in nature descriptions and talking about people being affected by nature/weather. There's going to be an actual plot, but I've planned it so it can take a backseat if I just want to talk about trees and mushrooms and the like.

I've been collecting a folder of pretty pictures of woods and meadows for inspiration. And names, so I won't get stumped as soon as I come across the first minor character.

That's pretty awesome. It is nice when you really enjoy what you are writing about.

Haha, thanks. It is nice, even if my particular specialty is maybe a bit boring at times. I had a Nano project few years ago that was seriously at least 30% made of snow, just describing snow, people walking in the snow, snow plows, snow angels, people freezing their fingers off. It was awesome to write, but unless you're really into snow, I wouldn't rec reading it. Good thing I write for myself mostly.

Eh, write what you like. I had a reviewer message me today to tell me I should stop writing smut and start writing other things for my OTP. Only I like writing smut. That's what I have fun writing. I have a few fans, but I mostly write for me. I write things I want to see in fics and I write what I enjoy writing. Why write if you don't enjoy it?

Good for you. I know it wouldn't sound too exciting to a lot of people but I like when a piece of writing shows that the writer was really enjoying what they were writing about.

Also you just reminded me that I still need to come up with a name bank that I can pull names from during NaNo.

Re: Writers Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, truly. Your comment made me smile. I try not to get down, since everyone writes different things, but everyone I've talked to have these really grand and exciting Nano plans and I'm just like "well I saw this cool tree and I want to put it in my story".

Name banks are so important, if I don't have one I name things with items that I can see, or don't name them at all, which gets really confusing once the second "girl" enters the scene.

Best of luck with your Nano! And have loads of fun. :)

Working on the episodic plot project, decided it's going to be my Nano project for 2015. (along with planning for a thing on the side.)

Going to be using something like GoogleSheets to keep track of progress. I might use an extensions for chrome to block distractions (maybe if there's an extension that dos it for a certain amount of time. Going to the sites can be a reward when I'm done.

I'm super excited about it.

Arthurian legend, retold from the perspectives of the characters that get the shaft in every other version (Morgause, Morgan le Fay, Mordred, and Guinevere). It's my NaNo project.

That sounds really awesome. I'd love to read it when it is done. I love Arthurian myths. I tend to like Merlin's POV rather than Arthur's, but the POV of all of those people would be really interesting.

Re: Writers Thread

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-10-31 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I'm also partial to Merlin's POV, but I really want to explore these, because they're so often cast as either flat-out villains, or at best they're just really awful at being good. I kinda want to flesh out what made them that way.

I especially love the idea of things from the women's point of view. I did not like Mists of Avalon (even before I found out about the author), but the general concept of myths from the point of view of the marginalized is something I'm really interested in.

Re: Writers Thread

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-10-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I hated Mists of Avalon for so many reasons that had nothing to do with the author being a total fucking horror show of a person. First and foremost being that everyone who is not Morgaine is either brainless, spineless, heartless, or some combination of the three.

I'm finishing up my outline for my NaNo project. It's largely a mystery so I'm making sure I know how all the different puzzle pieces get to the main character. I'm also going through the story from the point of view of other characters in my head to make sure that everything they do makes sense with their motivations and what they know.

The one thing that's kind of bugging me is that I have two antagonists and both of them ended up being way more sympathetic than I expected so I don't know if it might seem kind of anti-climactic when they finally appear onscreen after trying to build them up as threats before.

Re: Writers Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
When would these sympathetic parts of your antagonists be revealed? If you build them as a threat first, and then the readers find out this other stuff it might make for delightful conflicting emotions. But it is a fine line to walk on.

That's how I'm hoping it works out. Right now the plan is just to write it according to my outline and then see what needs to be fixed in order to make it work better.

I got my Yuletide assignment, and now I have to write M/M first time romance (can't write sex). Anyone want to throw some ideas my way? It's a modern day movie with some age difference. I'd rather avoid stuff like AUs and case!fic because that usually takes me like 30k+ and I'd like to keep it between 5 to 10k. If anyone has any tips for shortening something like that, I'd be happy to hear that too.

Well...what's their relationship? Or can you describe the characters?

Re: Writers Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I should have been writing for 2 fests, however life happened so....in the meantime, I'm working on a long fic. What started out as a fairly comical self insert is turning out to be a pretty plotty fic...and the sel finsert is more of an actual OC, the way things are headed now...there's far more plot happening regarding the two Canon characters. I'm surprised!

I don't know if I would ever post it any where? Do you have any such stories, and what have you done?

Also, I'm trying to let the story "write itself", let the characters lead...but i do have another OC, and I don't want her evil to just be "Evil for the sake of evil"/some cliche...any suggestions? As in, should I obscure her reasoning? ( think that's what I'm going to do)What should be her reasoning for starting a cult of sorts? Should it be political upheaval? I feel the idea of control needs to be a bit more nuanced to add more depth to her (and the story). Am I thinking too hard about this?

In other news, I should be writing a paper, but I'm here.

I'm gearing up for NaNo but I'm also working at my day job a lot so I'm building everything up in my head and hoping that when the time comes it'll just pour out of my brain instead of just leaving me staring at a blank screen.
