It's a bit cliche, but I was very fond of the Materia system from Final Fantasy VII. People don't have an innane ability to use magic, but equipping what is more or less solidified chunks of the planet's energy allows you to use spells. If you wanted to go further into it, based on the stat modification, you could say that equipping Materia heightens your magical strength and defense, but diminishes your physical strength/defense and health.

I like that one too. Equipping magic doesn't sound cliche to me; has it been used often?

I like that too. It's smooth for a video game, and kind of hammers the point that magic is from this Lifestream consciousness, which is neat. And I agree, the stats were always interesting, I liked how it evened it out. Overload on heavy materias like offensive spells and Summons, and your HP really takes a hit.
