The Nightwatch series had a really cool magic idea. I don't know if it's my favorite one, but it was super interesting.

First, people with innate magical powers can do either good magic or evil magic. As I recall, they are divided this way without any choice, really, though perhaps they can "turn"... Anyway, to "power up", good mages need to absorb good thoughts from people, whereas bad mages need those bad thoughts... so ironically, good mages leave people feeling sad, and bad mages leave people feeling good because all their anxieties, fears, etc. are gone.

So what makes the magic good or evil? The wielder's intentions? Or can good magic (for example) only heal people, while evil magic can only make them sick, or what?
