Hi f!s, I'm curious. Where do you shop for business wear?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Most of mine are from Banana Republic, but I am a lady and have had not one but two close acquaintances who are former BR sales associates. Lots of pretty blouses, and basics like pencil skirts and trousers and blazers.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling that won't work out for me, though I just might look pretty killer in a pencil skirt. I doubt my coworkers would see the humour though.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well they do have standard menswear too. Take heart in knowing that whatever you wind up wearing, your appearance won't be judged nearly as harshly as the average woman's.

Seconding Banana! They also have interesting/colorful options that still feel professional.

I also got my favorite basic black suit dress from Ann Taylor. Their suiting collection is not ground-breaking, but if you need to build up your basics I recommend it.

I don't, I feel like I'm in drag in business wear.

But that was like totally not helpful.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well as above, I sadly don't have that option. I also don't want to have to go to one of those stores for 50+ old guys though, so I am a bit at a loss.

That sucks. Good luck.

Middle class level bespoke tailors. Can't speak specifically to what you'd have in Canada, but I'm sure you'll have places that serve the market of a couple of bespoke suits for £1000. It's generally going to be a worthwhile investment.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
There might be something like that around my area but I can't say I can think of any offhand. The problem being that I live in a fairly small city. I wish I didn't need to worry about this but it looks like I soon will.

Anything with a strong online base like say http://www.asuitthatfits.com/shop/index.php ?

They'll be able to help you out, and it'll just be a matter of making whatever trip you need a couple times to get the fit right.

Also make sure you get a couple decent ties and belts, something just on the right side of being noticeable without drawing all the attention. And shiny as fuck shoes are always a good shout.

H&M sometimes has decent things for women at least, but I don't know how it is for men. They have a "Modern Classics" collection currently at least that is a bit businessy.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Any dept. store, really. JC Penney and Dillards are good about prepackaging dress shirts and ties that look good together.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of fear for people who can't pair a dress shirt and a tie that look good together. They're probably the same people who use K-Cups and detergent pods because measuring is too hard.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I kind of fear shitty people who judge other people for taking advantage of convenience.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have tried this, actually. The department stores in my region are Sears, The Bay, and ...I guess WalMart.

None of them actually carry men's sizes in my size.

I get some suits at Macy's. They have nice Calvin KLein suits that are kind of expensive but nice. Other than that, just any of the general plus size stores will have good blazers. But then again, women can get away with buying their blazers and pants separate more than men can.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeep. It kills me a little, because if that were the case I'd sure have a lot more options for work wear.

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-11-06 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I have 5 or 6 pairs of black slacks, so I can pair nearly any blazer with them. makes things easy.

Wrong person to ask since my office is casual (we don't interface with clients, and even when we do our clientele couldn't be bothered to care how you're dressed), but when I've done business clothes in the past, JC Penney was my go-to. Decent prices, decent stuff, and unlike most mall stores they don't assume everyone is a size 10-12.

I have a fancy Portmans custom suit for the fancy business wear, the rest of it is carefully chosen mix of cheap Kmart and brand names on sale at Myer. I generally don't like wearing the one shirt more than a year as they go out of season. So daily business's wear is the cheap end with high end Blazers, jewellery etc.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-06 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well I might just have to resort to custom tailored things anyway. Being a man of small stature is pretty irritating when almost all outlets carry a size 32 waist minimum and a size 34 inseam minimum.

...and I'm usually at 28-30 waist and 33 inseam.

First world problems.

Corporate wear gets such a big sigh. I'm going to have to go waist money on new pants and some cheap tailoring to properly for them. There's a local guy who's like $10 per 2 items (simple hemming etc). Life saver.

/not really a fashion person but learning because work. Urgh.

Actually, this made me think of something. I used to get a magazine that catered to actors and directors/designers, and there were always ads for this specific chain of suit shops that cater to men 5'7" and under. Because actors that height gotta work harder to get jobs, and productions that have cast actors of that size they gotta costume. I don't know if that helps. It probably doesn't, as it would be most likely found in major cities, but it was a thought.

Macy's. Or Nordstrom.
