This is how I feel with the Leia metal bikini cosplay: it seems to be the go-to costume, mainly to send horny fanboys into overdrive. The Leia bikini cosplayers and the fanboys really missed the point of the costume: it was a form of sexual slavery by Jabba and that in itself is gross.

Sexual slavery and a whole lot of humiliation as well, given the chains. In and of itself it's a sexy outfit but it's kinda weird to wear it given the context.

Buh, buh, buh 'mpowerment...titties.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
OH GOSH! It's PROBLEMATIC! RAPE CULTURE! Blah blah blah. Stop sucking the fun out of every damn thing by looking for things to be offended over.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-07 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, me thinking it's weird is the worst thing in the whole world, how awful for you. You know, SJWs are annoying, but people who throw a ridiculous hissyfit over imaginary SJWs are just as bad.

You seem to be over-reacting to a comment that really wasn't posed in an inflammatory way at all.

"looking for things to be offended over."

This phrase is starting to annoy me as much as people who get offended over everything (which I really didn't see in the comment you responded to- tbh, you seem more offended, though I'm sure you wouldn't use that word to describe your own thoughts).

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
Except that the comment you replied to mentioned nothing about "problematic rape culture" or being offended. Do you always lose your shit this easily when people don't wholeheartedly endorse the stuff you enjoy? Because seeing SJW boogeymen isn't really the reaction of a sane person.

You have to understand; there's a whole generation of fanboys for whom Leia's metal bikini marks the exact moment they became interested in girls. You can literally date the commencement of puberty to the day they first saw Return of the Jedi.

Which, in turn, means there's a generation of geek girls who've learned that if they wear that bikini, they will get laid to the power of LAID. That cute nerdy guy will be fucking you like it's his JOB. You're riding the Bone Train straight to Poundtown, and people that even LOOK like you are gonna be walking funny.

ia with this comment. I mean, dressing sexy for a convention, whatever. Though I agree it misses the point and feels like its misrepresenting the character - that portion was awful and gross, and Leia's shining moment is strangling Jabba with the chain, not being a sexy harem slave. But what is really frustrating is how much more marketing that costume gets, even more than her "default" costume - even for children's toys. It's annoying.

Finding it on children's items is annoying. Was going to buy my niece some paper dolls, until I realized that Leia's only outfit was the bikki. At least Disney has decided to get rid of the image.

I always wanted her Bespin cloud city outfit with the antique lace cape. I saw it in one the traveling museum tours after episode 1 came out. Oh so pretty.

That's my favorite costume of hers, and probably the most detailed and elaborite one she has. It also looks like comfy pajamas.

Personally, I always thought the white hooded dress and hair buns from the first movie was her most iconic look. The bikini is all well and good, but it looks like something off of any random pulp fantasy novel cover. It's only iconic because Star Wars is so widely famous, not because the costume itself is so terribly unique. No one else looks like cinnamon-bun Leia. If you wanted to make absolutely sure people recognize you as Leia, that's the one to go for. Plus, she carries a gun and kicks ass in that costume. It's also all-ages appropriate and handy in climates where it gets cold on Halloween.

Uhh... you do know there are a lot of people (men and women both) who are into that as roleplay, right?

I don't understand how wearing a costume that means something negative in canon is missing the point of it, either. That's like saying if you dress as a zombie you're missing the point because zombies are dead and stupid, so you must be implying you actually want to be dead and stupid.

At least Disney is doing away that slutty image.

Quibble....it's not slutty, it's more slave-y. Although yes, I agree that at least Disney's finally ditching it.
